Lisa Jennings tells us what John Cywinski and Modern Restaurant Concepts are up to with their strategy to expand Qdoba Restaurant Corporation "The No. 2 Mexican fast casual has a long way to go to get close in size to arch rival Chipotle, but Qdoba is refranchising in a shift to the asset-light model. Qdoba Mexican Eats is doubling down on franchising with plans to double in unit count. The fast-casual chain, which was acquired by Butterfly Equity last year and merged with the now multi-brand group Modern Restaurant Concepts (MRC), has set the goal of doubling its 750-unit count over the next decade. The chain expects 40 new restaurants to open this year, with 60 planned for 2024 and more than 80 starting in 2025 and each year going forward. “Qdoba is an exceptionally well-positioned brand in one of the most attractive restaurant categories,” said John Cywinski, MRC’s CEO, in a statement on Wednesday. “We possess long-standing momentum, strong unit economics, a compelling operating model, an extraordinarily passionate guest following, and significant untapped geographic potential.” It’s not surprising that Cywinski is looking to franchisees to grow the brand. I've also been a multi-unit franchisee, owning and operating two co-branded Subway and Dunkin' locations in Madrid, and serving as the Exclusive Agent for French pizza brand Le Kiosque à Pizzas in Spain and Portugal, overseeing eight locations. Joanna Fantozzi Nation's Restaurant News reports "Papa Johns signed the development deal with franchisee Nadeem Bajwa to open stores across the Midwest and in Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Florida." Papa Johns announced Tuesday plans to open 50 more restaurants over the next five years under the terms of a new development deal with franchisee Nadeem Bajwa and the BAJCO GROUP. The restaurants are expected to mostly open in Bajwa’s existing markets across the Midwest, and in Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Florida. Bajco Group currently owns 200 restaurants, and plans to one day own more than 500 Papa Johns locations. “Nadeem’s story is a clear example of how Papa Johns supports its franchisees to build shared success,” Joe Sieve, Papa Johns chief restaurant officer, said in a statement. “After starting his Papa Johns journey as a delivery driver, today he is one of the strongest ambassadors for the opportunities Papa Johns presents to its team members and franchisees. Nadeem’s confidence in the brand and expertise in the industry reinforces why he knows there has never been a better time to grow with Papa Johns.” Bajwa started as a Papa Johns delivery driver more than 30 years ago, and has since worked his way up in the business world through owning and operating Papa Johns restaurants. “You have a responsibility to determine what people get out of their job,” Nadeem said in a statement. “It’s important to develop future leaders and surround yourself with people who have a desire to grow like you. If I slow down, that impacts their goals and dreams too.” This franchise development deal was conceived as a result of the Back to Growth program, part of Papa Johns’ Back to Better 2.0 strategy, that is meant to incentivize franchisees to grow by lowering marketing expenditure requirements from 8% to 6%. The Back to Better 2.0 strategy, which former outgoing Rob Lynch announced in January, is designed to fill “untapped and underserved markets in North America,” as well as drive top-line sales growth for both the company and for franchisees.  Lynch said during the company’s last earnings call that he expects that the company will see the results of Back to Better 2.0 in the second quarter of 2024, which just began and extends until the end of June. Consumers are exploring different types of restaurants as they try to scale back their spending. Quick service restaurants (QSRs) are seeing higher foot traffic than full-service restaurants (FSRs) at the moment, but there’s an ongoing conversation about what QSRs can do to maintain that momentum even as costs continue to rise. Rather than passing off those ever-rising costs to diners, operators are figuring out ways to cover those costs in a customer-friendly way. Menu Prices Continue to Surge in 2024 The year 2024 has proven exceptionally challenging for restaurant franchises. 📉 New federal data indicates that menu prices surged in July, rising at double the rate of grocery prices. Dining out now costs 4.1% more than last year (per the feds in DC, I am skeptical it is actually that low), while supermarket prices have only increased by 1.1%. This disparity is reshaping consumer behavior. Families are increasingly opting for home-cooked meals over dining out, making a significant impact on restaurant traffic. While the Consumer Price Index (CPI) saw a slight 0.2% uptick in July—driven mainly by fuel oil and housing costs—the inflation gap between eating out and shopping for groceries is becoming more pronounced. From a franchise perspective, these economic shifts are palpable. Our law firm hasn't conducted a restaurant brand FDD review in months. Instead, we are witnessing a concerning rise in restaurant franchisees seeking to exit their franchising agreements. The financial strain, coupled with shifting consumer preferences, has created an environment where restaurant franchises are struggling to maintain profitability and growth. Despite a slowdown in the rate of price hikes—from 0.4% in June to 0.2% in July—the burden remains heavy. While the White House asserts that wages are outpacing these price increases, it’s clear that many franchisees are feeling the pinch. President Biden has acknowledged the issue, stating, We have more work to do to lower costs, but we are making real progress. Again, I am skeptical.... As a franchise attorney, I am closely monitoring these developments. The significant increase in franchisees looking to exit their brands is alarming.
