As Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Advocate at The World Bank I am always interested in learning about what builds greater tolerance and respect in the work place. With 170 nationalities, the World Bank is one of the most diverse institutions in the world -- and this certainly makes it a rich and fun place to work! But our diversity can also lead to cultural misunderstandings and tensions. This week we celebrated Intercultural Week 2024 with a focus on Neuroscience and Cultural Intelligence in Navigating Emerging Global Crises. I joined an excellent session with Dr. Mai Nguyen of Culture Move on “From Survival to Thrival: How does the Brain deal with Cultural Differences?" Her main thesis is that to overcome differences we need to: 1/focus on similarities (shared values, concerns...), 2/focus on how differences can be presented in a neutral and objective way (avoiding inflammatory language often present in the media), and 3/focus on the individual (humanize numbers, listen empathetically...). All great reminders that we are more similar than we are different, and that we gain from recognizing what unites us rather than what divides us. As an illustration, Dr. Nguyen shared this Heineken ad "Worlds Apart" which says so much about how powerful and joyful we are when we connect across our differences. Last night, a few of us from d+m attended Get Sh*t Done—an event about how some of the best strategists in the business make great things happen. The panel featured an incredible lineup: ✨ Margaux Revol: Independent strategist and former Strategy Partner at AMV BBDO 🌍 Ayo Fagbemi: Co-founder of Explorers Club and advocate for diversity in strategy 🎮 Zoe Scaman: Founder of Bodacious, exploring the intersections of culture, fandom, and tech 🍫 Sandie Dilger: CMO at Warp Snacks and former strategist behind iconic campaigns like Cadbury’s “Gorilla” The discussions were packed with insights. A few takeaways that have stuck with us: 🤝 Generosity matters: Sharing knowledge and building networks strengthens everyone. 💡 Collaboration leads to better ideas: Teams working together, aligned toward a shared goal, create stronger strategies. 🕰️ Space to think is key: Confidence and creativity need time and room to grow. Be selfish and take time for yourself. 🚀 Taboos have power: Leaning into them, challenging boundaries, and thinking bigger than the brief is where game-changing work happens. 🔑 Open the door for others: The industry benefits from creating opportunities for new and diverse talent. I want to celebrate a recent fulfilling experience 🥳 Last week, I had the privilege of hosting a DEIBA (diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and accessibility) workshop for the Cascade Productions team on building an inclusive workplace culture, which was an absolute game-changer for their team! I led the team through a series of immersive activities that sparked creativity and deep conversations on actioning DEIBA into the workplace and what DEIBA actually means, to them and for them... we brainstormed core values, shared ideas on showcasing diverse employees and communities and I helped them to draft an inclusive values statement that would resonate with everyone. Cascade Productions are very much thinking about inclusion and accessibility in the work they are doing for clients (like most agencies are), in my experience this has lead to forgetting about workplace initiatives and individual internal support. This can lead to blind spots when crafting DEIBA solutions for clients. I'm looking forward to seeing how their team implement the learnings from this session. Step by step - For me it's about empowering the events, MICE and hospitality community to be more diverse and create a culture of inclusivity, equality and accessibility.
