Let me introduce you to Blue Angel #9, Samuel Oliver Brittain. This growing human of mine has Emotional Intelligence, dynamic teaming, and sportsmanship skills that are off the charts for a 10-year old. Hell, there are people my age that can’t compare! Flag football season is winding down, but our car ride convos home after each game are deep. He asks me how I think he did, did I see his plays, was I proud of him, and he lets out the emotion (and 10 is quite an emotional age!) of defeat sometimes. The things I’m most proud of aren’t the solid plays that I catch of him on video sometimes. But, rather, what he tells me about on the car ride. The soft accolade he gave the competing teammate when he saw them make a solid catch, or when they ran in a score into the end zone. The genuine concern he shows them when he checks on them to see if they are ok when rowdy kids collide on the field. We then talk about his plays, and how every game we should strive to be better than the last one, even if it’s only 1% better. If we make our lives about competition and winning, our children will as well. Samuel is here for the OPPOSING team, just as much as he is for his own. Wow. It’s an absolute honor to be his Mom! Huge thanks to the coaches this season, my fave is always Rebecca Morelock, who lifts them up at the end of every game, and holds them accountable too, if need be. The amount of effort it takes scouts to identify and approach talent still blows my mind watching Adam Sandler's ''Hustle'' for probably the 10th time. Spending 250 days of the year away from home, in the air, while researching upcoming prospects and watching hours of game footage. Every Philadelphia 76er needs a Stanley Sugarman. You need that unshakable persistence in talent identification and development because, come game day, it's these talented individuals you gotta trust to bring home the win. It's not just the hard, technical skills either. It's attitude, mental tenacity and culture fit that needs vigilant observation too or the whole dynamic and formula cracks.
