Insights from the BDO Business and Accounting Event 🏦 Today, I had the wonderful experience of attending the BDO Insight event in Reading, which offered a comprehensive overview of the company’s approach to accounting, finance, and career development. The event highlighted BDO’s core values and provided a clear picture of the diverse apprenticeship and graduate roles available. - Hearing from BDO’s Leadership: A highlight of the day was listening to two senior team members share their career stories and insights into BDO’s work environment. Their openness about their experiences made it easy to understand the collaborative and supportive culture within the firm. The Q&A session was particularly valuable, as it allowed us to ask questions and learn more about BDO’s ethos and mission. - Exploring Early Career Paths: The event also introduced us to the various apprenticeship and graduate programs BDO offers. The team explained the application process in detail and shared advice on what they look for in candidates. It was eye-opening to learn how BDO is dedicated to fostering growth and development at every stage of a career. - Networking and Personal Connections: To end the event, there was a networking session where we had the chance to meet other attendees and BDO representatives. This was an amazing opportunity to engage in personal conversations and gain tailored advice from experienced professionals. Thanks to BDO and Young Professionals for organizing such an insightful and interactive event. It was a great way to better understand the industry and connect with like-minded individuals.

-Today I had the incredible opportunity to attend a Young Professionals event for accounting and professional services, and it was an amazing experience. -The webinar was extremely informative as I heard speakers from companies such as PwC, KPMG, Grant Thornton and many more talk about how to achieve success in a competitive career like this, as well as current apprentices share their tips and tricks as to how they secured their place in this industry, and what steps they individually took to get there. -I also learned how to succeed in interviews, and how commercial awareness is a big thing that many people lack when applying for industries like these- It’s more than just what’s written on a companies website. -Overall, this experience allowed me to elevate my knowledge in the financial industry, and also professional skills needed in this type of business.

From 2025 You Will Be Able to Become a Chartered Accountant Without a Degree With the shortage of Accountants expected to be at 58,000 by 2033, the Institute of Chartered Accountants has announced an apprenticeship like training scheme that will allow people wanting to become Accountants to learn by working on the job, instead of taking the current route of a university degree. It could be argued that lowering entry requirements could dilute the profession’s standards and diminish the University qualifications already earned by past graduates, but I think this is a smart move for the CA and its members, with firms finding it increasingly hard to attract Graduates to the industry. In an article for the AFR, Euan Black spoke with Rob Dunderdale (Head of Talent Attraction at KPMG Australia) who said employees recruited through this type of program tended to “stay longer and generally progress faster through our organisation. They spend time with our business, they get to build connections quickly, and they understand how we work.” A traineeship system like this emphasizes the value of practical experience over academic qualifications that can be expensive and time-consuming. People can gain exposure to the profession before making such a big commitment and it can counteract the appeal of much larger Graduate salaries that can be earned in other industries. Is the new Traineeship Program a good idea or should the CA stick with the current University requirements to undertake its qualification? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. #ALRARecruitment #CharteredAccountants

Following on from Jonathan Holt's post last week and his letter in the Financial Times - https://lnkd.in/eZkKcGkp - this afternoon, I attended a KPMG insight webinar hosted by Dan M., Nadia Dabbagh-Hobrow, and Ben Chapman. The session covered apprenticeship options, KPMG's values and what the firm looks for in candidates. It was also great to hear from current apprentices Hope Deathridge, Sarah Agho, Nicole Gavaza, and Jon Evans who shared their own experiences and perspectives. A few things that stood out: - Start at 16: Begin a 2-year Business Services apprenticeship right after GCSEs. Earn a solid £23k–£24k while working toward A-level equivalent qualifications. - Start at 18: After A-levels, embark on a 5-year Audit apprenticeship. By the end, you’ll have a Level 7 (Master’s-level) qualification and be a fully fledged chartered accountant. - Earn While You Learn: Gain on-the-job experience, build a strong network and pick up professional qualifications—without the typical student debt. If you’re exploring early career opportunities, this is worth checking out! KPMG UK

I had a great day yesterday, attending my old school with Crowe UK colleagues (and fellow WGS alumni) Joshua Evans and Mark Evans! We spent the day talking to lots of students from Wolverhampton Grammar School about our apprenticeship programme, answering questions about why we enjoy working for Crowe. It was also great to get a tour of the school and even bump in to some of my teachers - 25 years on! 😯 When I made the move to head up our Early Careers recruitment team, I had two concerns - both of which I have kept to myself. Until now... Firstly, that I would not have the ability to connect with the next generation of talent. My thinking was - to really get to grips with making our process more robust, enjoyable and attracting the right people for our business, I would need to have a passion for this new area of focus - building a connection with students and wanting to learn more about what inspires them. It is safe to say, with the support of my team, I have found a niche that inspires me to want to invest so much energy in to all of the above. Engaging with young professionals at the start of their career journeys and talking about all the wonderful things a career in accounting (and obviously Crowe) can present has given me new and fresh perspective and level of job satisfaction. The second point was that I would lose some engagement from colleagues here at Crowe, with whom I had built up strong relationships with and worked closely with over the years. This point couldn't have been less true! Having spoken to so many colleagues, from Partners to current trainees, one thing is very clear - all have fantastic opinions on what we do and how we do it. How we can be an employer of choice, how we can ensure we are presenting opportunities to a #diverse talent pool and how we can make sure our processes are enjoyable and rewarding for our students and our people here at Crowe. This year's recruitment season is nearing its end and soon our planning for an exciting, successful, diversity-focused campaign will begin. I could not be more excited to collaborate with my team and colleagues to ensure this next one is a belter! #wearecrowe #apprenticeship #careersfair #diversityandinclusion #earlycareersrecruitment Sarah W. Paul Knopp, Chair and CEO of KPMG US, has called the falling number of a CPA accountants a “brewing crisis.." and that the industry needs to fix it "really quickly”. To complete the CPA, individuals must go through a fifth year of education, in addition to completing a full 4-year undergraduate degree, to meet the 150 credit hour requirement to earn the license. Paul told the Financial Times that the industry should replace the fifth year of schooling with an apprenticeship programme, the first head of a Big 4 firm to suggest this move. The phrase “war-for-talent” has been increasingly thrown around in recent times, and this may not be surprising when considering that between 2016 and 2021, the industry saw a 33% drop in candidates sitting the CPA exam, with a further 7% decrease between 2021 and 2022. What suggestions would you make to incentivise the programme again?
