Picture this. You're a candidate on the hunt for your first job or some seasonal work to pay the bills. You discover a job fair advertising thousands roles: You sign up, clear your schedule, perfect your resume, print out a few copies, and practice your interview questions. On the day of the event, one of two things happens: 1. You show up early and start a line until you finally make it into the fair, where you wait in even more lines to talk to hiring companies. or 2. You show up "on time" wait in a massive line until you're told that all the roles had been filled—before before the event is even over! Not an ideal situation and that's exactly what happened at the Canadian National Exhibition job fair. It's hard to blame them. They hosted a ticketed fair where they had over 37K candidates apply, more than double the number from last year. This shows how difficult the job market really is. But this experience isn't okay for candidates and can't be fun for hiring managers either. It doesn't have to be this way. Instead of long hours in lines and conference centres, career fairs can be a good, seamless experience for everyone involved. Using Withe, Candidates can see roles and requirements in advance, and schedule time-slots so they know exactly when to arrive. Plus, check-in is fast and simple with QR codes — goodbye to long lines that go round the block. There’s no manual entry of paper resumes and scribbled down notes for hiring managers. Everything gets uploaded to your ATS automatically. Want to be a part of the solution? If you're hosting or participating in a career fair, hit me up. Let's break the cycle by hosting efficient and effective career fairs and hiring events using Withe.

Job Fairs - Is It Worth Attending? I went to a 'PROFESSIONAL' job fair recently only to find that the business HAD NO INTENTION hiring folks. The 'representative' had no business cards, no online presence, and no 'power' for hiring influence. What a waste of time. However, I am an optimistic person - please convince me that I am wrong - that job fairs are legit. In the meantime: --- Forty-percent of companies said they have posted a fake job listing this year, according to a survey in May of 650 hiring managers from career site Resume Builder. Three in 10 companies currently have fake listings on their sites or on job boards, according to the survey. --- Hiring managers told their companies' human resources departments, senior managers and executives and, in a few cases, investors or consultants have come up with the fake job schemes. Of the companies that engaged in the practice, 45% posted between one to five fake job listings; 19% posted 10; 11% posted 50; 10% posted 25; and 13% posted 75 or more. The roles spanned all levels of seniority, from entry level openings to executive-tier jobs. Preparing for a Job Fair. Job Fairs are a great place to connect with the business for employment opportunities. Many local businesses will attend to recruit for a variety of positions. Before attending a career or job fair, get a list of employers attending, research the companies of what they do and what kind of positions they are recruiting, choose the companies you are interested in, and then map out your route. Dress like you are attending an interview and wear comfortable shoes as you may be waiting in line and doing a considerable amount of walking. Bring copies of your resume or business cards with you. Prepare questions you want to ask the people representing the company such as why do you like working here, what is the leadership style, what are the working conditions onsite, remote or hybrid, what positions are available, what skills and experience are your looking for, what is your ideal applicant and how do I apply? Ask the HR staff to review your resume for feedback. Get a business card so that you can connect with the person after the job or career fair for follow-up. Make sure you pick up any promotional information from the company as it will help address why you want to work for the company and what you know about the company. Also, be considerate of the time you are talking to the staff at the booths, keep your conversations short, and make a lasting positive impression. 🌟 Discover a Unique Recruitment Opportunity: The Reverse Job Fair at Eccles Town Hall! 🌟 Q: What exactly is a Reverse Job Fair? A: Imagine a traditional job fair turned on its head! Instead of employers setting up booths, it’s the job seekers who showcase their skills and experiences at their own tables. Employers walk around, engage in conversations, and discover potential candidates. Q: What role do employers play at this event? A: Employers are the audience with a unique opportunity to meet a diverse group of talented individuals, learn about their skills, and even discuss potential job opportunities. It’s a chance to see the person behind the CV. Q: Who sets up the tables at a Reverse Job Fair? A: The job seekers themselves! Each participant sets up a table to represent their skills, experiences, and the type of work they’re seeking. It’s a personal touch that adds depth to their professional profile. Q: Do I need to have vacancies in my company to attend? A: Not necessarily on the day. If you are anticipating recruitment for specific roles in the future but these positions are not yet open, you are still encouraged to attend. Feel free to bring along job specifications and share the expected timescale for recruitment. This event offers a fantastic opportunity to get ahead in finding the perfect candidate for upcoming roles. Q: Why is the job fair organised in this manner? A: This format empowers job seekers to present themselves in a creative and personal way, while employers get a clearer, more holistic view of potential candidates. It’s a win-win: candidates stand out, and employers find hidden gems. Q: Why should I attend this Reverse Job Fair? A: Beyond the opportunity to fill current vacancies, you’ll be networking, promoting your company, and perhaps most importantly, supporting an inclusive employment landscape. It’s an investment in the community and in the future of your business. 📅 Mark Your Calendar! When: 26th March Where: Eccles Town Hall Hosted by: Salford Supported Employment Service Interested? It's still #WorkforceWednesday so I want to talk about perfecting business services. One strategy in perfecting any process is to be specific, and I want to know how everyone defines the difference between a #JobFair and #HiringEvent. At Employ Prince George's, job fairs are large-scale events with 10 or more businesses, with a ratio of quadruple the amount of job seekers versus employers. Opposite of job fairs are customized recruitment events that have less than 5 employers with a targeted amount of recruited job seekers. Do you use this as your definition? How do you maximize the outcomes of your job fairs or hiring events? Is there a third type of event? #WorkforceWednesday #WorkforceWire #HiringEvents #JobFairs #BusinessServices #WIOA #AmericanJobCenter

4moBack in 2012, I was in b-schools and attended a massive NBMBAA Career Fair which probably had the same number of people as the CNE. Honestly, It was great for picking up some cool swag but a horrible expreince for actually trying to find a job for exactly the reasons that you mentioned. Daniel I'm glad that you are working on this exact problem.
