Unpopular opinion: most cannabis people don't want to drink their weed. I've been hearing the Bev hype since I've been in the industry, but the numbers never support a large market size. Perhaps that's changed with access at places like Total Wine? Anyone have that market data? In particular, repeat customers? Or is it primarily a one time novelty purchase? Two things in particular that I just don't see THC bevs surmounting: 1) They're always pitched as an alcohol replacement or alternative. Some people may be extroverted social stoners, but in my anecdotal experiences most people aren't bar hopping after getting high. It tends to be a more introverted crowd. 2) Why drink weed at all, when you could nibble on a $2 gummy or chocolate and drink water with your alcohol imbibing friends - rather than paying the cost upscale? If it was physically possible, as an alcohol consumer I can say I would absolutely do the reverse.
Moms will fuel beverage growth. We do not see ourselves as "stoners" or avid users. We do not want to have the edible and wait to see what to expect. Also, Mommy Wine Culture is on its way out. We are all waking up to what a scam that was and that it doesn't actually help, but instead increases our anxiety and makes us feel like absolute crap. However, the habit and process of unwinding with a drink is ingrained is us now. Also, we host pool parties, events etc alot with our friends and I want to have a fun drink too with everyone, but I do not want alcohol. Also, my husband owns bars in New Orleans, one particularly being a Jazz Club on Frenchmen Street. I still want to go out and listen to music and enjoy a drink, but again not alcohol.
Obviously there is a market there or they wouldn't be experiencing growth in this sector of the industry. I don't particularly enjoy drinking THC seltzers but I also stopped drinking for the most part. While I enjoy a nice prosecco or a mocktail with dinner out from time to time, I won't drink beer or a cocktail. People's preferences are so vast. There will always be markets that appeal to someone. If the beverage companies made a zero sugar THC seltzer with no artificial sweeteners, then I'd consider it. I love seltzer water for the bubbles and touch of flavor. I don't want the excess sugar. I don't want the artificial sweeteners. But I'd also like to see them in different cannabinoid combos. Especially ones with THCV and CBG. I just don't like products that me put to sleep and leave me couch locked. Those I would 100% take to gatherings and such. What is out there now, and I've tried them, just seem to make me sleepy for the most part. I think there are so many possibilities for the future and they are just getting started. While I don't prefer these products now, I'm personally excited to see where they will take this sector of the industry. Even if it's just in helping to normalize cannabis consumption.
I disagree. I think people underestimate the difficulty of producing water soluble cannabinoids, and that limits the number of brands willing (or able) to enter the drink market. It’s much easier and cheaper to simply throw some distillate in a batch of gummies and hire a few culinary techs than it is to formulate nano-emulsions or conjugations, then further implement that into a product that still meets consumer preferences (taste/dosage/price) and shelf stability requirements. Give the tech and SoP’s a few more years to catch up and I think this product segment will see lots of expansion. Drinks are discrete, easy to dose, and can be marketed towards the “health conscious” consumers easier than a gummy or chocolate. I also think you have less of a concern with a child accidentally consuming a medicated drink over a medicated candy, albeit that responsibility should always be on the parent (similar to alcohol/prescription pills).
So you....your not the demographic. A lot of freedom in realizing now everything is procured for us stoners. Also are stoners introverted? or have we been siloed and shamed into hiding out consumption for generations thus making us inherently private? I don't purchase adult bevs. for me, I buy them to share with none/canna curious folks at social events to share because I am mindful enough to understand that modality is more digestible for gen. pop. Sharing is caring and a bong doesn't fit in my purse LOL discretion goes a long way for folks.
Up until about 9 months ago, I was totally where you are in regards to beverages. However, within the last 9 months, Ethereal Gold Dispensary has increased their beverage offerings and onboarded some really impressive and quite tasty brands: Nowadays, MXXN, Floral, High Spirits, and soon Foundry Nation & BLNCD. Not only are these quite tasty, but they come in a wide range of dosing options from 2 mg to 50 mg. These are not one time novelty items, as many customers have setup subscriptions and we are double industry average for repeat customers. An advantage of beverages over other edibles is that you typically feel the effects faster and they don't last as long. Another advantage, no hangover. Please note that when drinking cannabis beverages, do not drink and drive.
We don’t go bar hop with our Keef colas but it’s great for at home when hosting. Our friends are typically more stoners than drinkers so it’s nice to have beverage options for everyone to enjoy. I’d enjoy low dose more frequently because I do smoke a lot and would love to have the thc but without smoking because smoking at home means stepping outside due to strict restrictions in the condo. Sooo personally, I’m wondering why more people aren’t riding the train. I prefer that than an edible. I really like those quik drops too. I don’t like the fact that I can’t sit and enjoy an edible. It’s one gummy typically, not like I’m enjoying the flavors for a long time. With a bevie, I can enjoy that blue razz Keef Cola taste for a while 🤘🏼rock on
I think bevs are a way in to cannabis for non-cannabis users. And, those people who experience it at total wine or a bar might be more apt to go to a dispensary once they like something they tried in the wild. I’m really concerned about the lack of new consumers in the category. And, I blame the lack of education and mainstream advertising + the “scariness” factor of going to/being seen in the dispo.

6moWOW, I did not expect this post to explode like it did - thanks for all the discussion! I made this partly to caution the industry not to repeat the same mistakes. Is the Bev route a mistake? Honestly I have no idea. Some of the comments make me wonder if there is indeed a shift. But the major thing I can't get over is that Bevs just don't sell in markets with Rec access. They are selling to what I understand are markets that haven't had mainstream THC. This to me screams that people love weed (duh!), but prefer other consumption routes if they are available widely (not a sketchy "hemp" shop). I think MN will be a good bellwether. Sure, THC bevs are selling now but will they be displaced when rec dispensaries come online? Will bevs be the weed gateway for people? I can with confidence say been there, done that, lived and definitely believed the hype for a time...7 years ago. Anyone remember ebbu aqua drops? LOVED that product. Hit quick, wonderful different effects compared to edibles or most THC bevs. Wasn't enough to convince the market, unfortunately. Again, the scientist in me would love to see some objective data - not "data" from Bev companies
