It's hard to believe that six years have passed since I joined KPMG. Time has flown by so quickly; it feels like I started just yesterday. This past year has been transformative, filled with numerous professional and personal changes and challenges. These experiences have been invaluable in shaping a resilient and growth-oriented mindset. In the corporate world, success is not merely about the knowledge you possess but about your mindset—how swiftly you learn and unlearn, adapt, and continually seek better solutions. Here are key lessons I’ve learned this year: Prioritize Work-Life Balance: Balancing work and personal life is crucial.It hones your time management skills, making you more effective and efficient.Additionally, it allows you to pursue hobbies and interests, contributing to overall well-being and making you a well-rounded professional. A few days back, I had heard of Anna EY incident. It's very disheartening, and frightening that she faced such work pressure leading to her death. But, this is not the case with all the other Big 4 companies - Deloitte, KPMG, PwC. I have read a few posts stating that Big 4 culture is a lie. I have witnessed, the culture at one of the Big 4's, and it was the bext experience of my life. I spent 2 years of my career at Deloitte, and I am very proud to get associated with Deloitte. I had the best team, the best managers, and a great work culture. I didn't work for more than 7-8 hrs per day, and never had to beg for leave. Everything was streamlined and had endless growth opportunities, supportive teams, etc. Instead, my manager prioritized health over project, and other work commitments. What happened to Anna at EY is definitely unfortunate, but let's not generalize it for other Big 4's, at least not for Deloitte. It's been 9 years today, and the feeling is still surreal ✨ It was 20th August 2015, at 1:30 am, when an email popped up on my phone. To my surprise it was from KPMG India, congratulating me on being offered the role of a Staff Accountant. I yelled in joy, woke up my parents, and told them that I had finally made it to the BIG 4. For a person like me, I didn't have references that could help me get a direct entry. Coming from a middle-class family, we believed in working hard and making achieving your success, by yourself. I just had a goal to get into a BIG 4 and I gave in my very best. I gave my partner rounds in PWC and KPMG, Deloitte didn't have many vacancies, and EY was supposedly considered to have strict study leave policies back then. I didn't hear anything from PWC and my last hope was KPMG. Though I have given interviews at large and mid-sized firms, as a young professional, you want to get into the best! It's all about the grit, and the desperation with which you approach your goals. If you are motivated enough and want to achieve your goals anyhow, you eventually work and prepare for it to make things happen. And I am not a special case, every person is capable enough to make things happen if the person has the right mindset and is willing to give it all to achieve the set goals!
