AE revokes severance agreement renegotiates 150% increase. I consulted with a rep named Carson, who was abruptly terminated and offered little severance. Not knowing how much time he had to sign it or that he could even negotiate it, he quickly signed his severance offer. Carson came across my LinkedIn profile 5 days later and we had a call. As he was over 40 years old, he had 7 days to revoke the offer. After our initial call he was adamant that he wanted to revoke sevevance. Carson had spent hours reading my posts from the past year. He was angry at himself for rushing to sign it without negotiating it. He was confident I could help him negotiate a better offer. Carson had a base salary of $180k and was offered 1 month severance. Carson was the first of roughly ten clients I worked with who revoked their severance. When you revoke it, you have no standing offer. The employer never has no legal obligation to offer you severance. You have rejected their offer, and the deadline has passed. There is no longer any offer on the table. Seems risky. Stakes are higher. No safety net of an offer to accept. Don’t sweat it. Your employer wants your signature. That is the only reason they offer you severance. Don’t forget it. That signature comes at a price that you agree to. Not one that is forced down your throat with false deadlines. Severance is a legal binding, two-way contract. By its nature it should and must be negotiated. I worked with Carson to draft a response to the initial offer. We went back and forth with negotiations. Carson was able to increase his offer by 150% or $22,500. Not life changing money but money certainly needed. Charles feels great about his decision not only to increase the severance but to speak his truth and be heard. He was not happy with the termination but feels like he came out on top. It was a great win especially since the employer thought they were done $22.5k sooner. Always negotiate your severance.

Yes. If you can, you should fight the desire to come away with the first severance offer on the table without negotiation.
