"A Beginner's guide to therapy" if you will! This might help if you are a newbie thinking of taking therapy: 1)A therapist should have a minimum of a Master's degree in Psychology. They are not considered a therapist if they only have a diploma, completed a 3-month course, or a 6-month course. A Master's in Psychology is a must. 2) The first session is usually a consultation. You can ask questions, understand whether you like speaking to this particular therapist, etc. Actual therapy usually begins from the second session onwards. 3) When budgeting for therapy, understand that it is usually suggested that the therapist and client meet once a week. This frequency can be further discussed with the therapist and adjusted according to your own requirements. 4)Confidentiality is crucial in therapy, except in cases where you might be a harm to yourself or others. In such cases, disclosure is typically on a need-to-know basis. Make sure to discuss confidentiality in the consultation session. 5)When choosing a therapist, keep in mind: Psychiatrist: Can prescribe medication and has an MBBS. Clinical Psychologist: Typically deals with cases of ADHD, severe anxiety, depression, Schizophrenia, etc. Requires a Master's in Psychology, an M.Phil/M.Psy and RCI Licensing. Counseling Psychologist: A good starting point, and the therapist can refer you further if necessary. Again, a Master's in Psychology is a must. It's important to note that one type of mental health professional is not better than another; different professionals have different expertise and often work together. 6) A good therapist will create a space for open discussion, where you can talk about your concerns or feelings about the therapy itself. 7) If you feel uncomfortable or encounter something you don't like, you should have the space to address it in therapy. 8) Remember, it's not your responsibility to protect the therapist's feelings. If you feel you don't have that space, the professional might not be the right fit for you.Remember, they are human too, and your relationship with them is strictly professional – they are not your friend. Be respectful of these boundaries. 9) Therapy is not one size fits all, and it might take some trial and error to find the right therapist. It's okay to feel uncomfortable at times, but make sure to discuss everything with your therapist. PS- I am not a Mental Health Professional, this is based on my personal experience and conversations I have had with people. All the best. #mentalhealth #therapy #therapyinindia

According to the American Psychological Association, a psychologist is “an individual who is professionally trained in one or more branches or subfields of psychology. Training is obtained at a university or a school of professional psychology, leading to a doctoral degree in philosophy (PhD), psychology (PsyD), or education (EdD).” Therapists A “therapist” is an overarching term for a clinician who treats mental health concerns. It often applies, and is colloquially used, as a label for each of these three categories. For example, therapists often have a master’s degree, but a psychologist with a doctorate degree may also be called a therapist. Common degrees for a master’s level therapist include a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW, and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT. A master’s level therapist’s training may focus primarily on treatment, but they cover theory, development, society, and policy as well. According to the National Association of Social Workers, clinical social work is “a specialty practice area of social work which focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illness, emotional, and other behavioral disturbances.” Counselors Counseling tends to be shorter term, goal-oriented, and it addresses concrete, specific life challenges. By contrast, therapy with other professionals tends to be longer term, more exploratory and holistic, and it treats mental illness. Counselors often specialize in a specific area, such as marriage, addiction, grief, or abuse. For example, drug and alcohol counseling is a common form of counseling in which certified individuals help clients recover from alcohol and substance use disorders. https://lnkd.in/du_dSipN

Do you ever feel too overwhelmed to deal with your problems? If so, you’re not alone. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than a quarter of American adults experience depression, anxiety, or another mental disorder in any given year. Others need help coping with a serious illness, losing weight, or stopping smoking. Still others struggle to cope with relationship troubles, job loss, the death of a loved one, stress, substance abuse, or other issues. And these problems can often become debilitating. What is psychotherapy? A psychologist can help you work through such problems. Through psychotherapy, psychologists help people of all ages live happier, healthier, and more productive lives. In psychotherapy, psychologists apply scientifically validated procedures to help people develop healthier, more effective habits. There are several approaches to psychotherapy—including cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and other kinds of talk therapy—that help individuals work through their problems. Psychotherapy is a collaborative treatment based on the relationship between an individual and a psychologist. Grounded in dialogue, it provides a supportive environment that allows you to talk openly with someone who’s objective, neutral, and nonjudgmental. You and your psychologist will work together to identify and change the thought and behavior patterns that are keeping you from feeling your best. By the time you’re done, you will not only have solved the problem that brought you in, but you will have learned new skills so you can better cope with whatever challenges arise in the future. https://lnkd.in/dvwuYrs6

share your thoughts in comments In India, counseling psychologists can perform some kinds of psychodiagnosis but only to an extent. Counseling psychologists generally hold a Master's in Psychology degree. They can evaluate mental health, emotions, or behavior, but they may not make a diagnosis unless he or she possesses some training in the field of clinical psychology for serious types of mental illnesses. Clinical psychologists, with qualifiably more advanced levels of education and training, such as an M.Phil in Clinical Psychology [Nomenclature for M.phil will change], can diagnose severe mental disorders like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. They must also have RCI registration for the same. Even though counseling psychologists are not required to register with RCI when the problems are not grave, like stress, anxiety, or even mild depression, which is definitely not a serious mental illness, they may conduct some tests that purportedly detect personality or mental health issues but are limited to what they were educated and trained to do. Although counseling psychologists can actually assist in dealing with general mental health concerns, only clinical psychologists can diagnose complex problems.

Children and adolescents are at a significantly high risk of mental health problems during their lifetime, among which are depression and anxiety, which are the most common. Life skills education is one of the intervention programmes designed to improve mental well-being and strengthen their ability to cope with the daily stresses of life. This review aimed to identify and evaluate the effect of life skills intervention on the reduction of depression, anxiety and stress among children and adolescents. Following the Population, Intervention, Comparison and Outcome (PICO) model and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) 2009 checklist, eight databases (Academic Search Complete, CINAHL, Cochrane, MEDLINE, Psychology and Behavioural Sciences Collection, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science) were systematically reviewed from 2012 to 2020. The search was limited to English papers only. It included published experimental and quasi-experimental studies addressing the effect of life skills interventions on the reduction of at least one of the following mental health disorders: depression, anxiety and stress among children and adolescents (from the age of 5 years old to 18 years old). We used the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist for experimental and quasi-experimental studies to evaluate the quality of the included studies. This study was registered in PROSPERO [CRD42021256603]. The search identified only 10 studies (three experimental and seven quasi-experimental) from 2,160 articles. The number of the participants was 6,714 aged between 10 years old and 19 years old. Three studies in this review focused on depression and anxiety, whereas one study investigated depression and the other anxiety. Three studies targeted only stress and two examined the three outcomes, namely, depression, anxiety and stress. Almost in all studies, the life skills intervention positively impacted mental disorders, considering the differences among males and females. The overall methodological quality of the findings was deemed to be moderate to high. Our results clearly indicated the advantages of life skills programmes among adolescents in different settings and contexts. Nonetheless, the results highlight some important policy implications by emphasising the crucial roles of developers and policymakers in the implementation of appropriate modules and activities. Further research examining life skills intervention with a cultural, gender perspective, age-appropriate and long-term effect is recommended. https://lnkd.in/d6VQC3an

It can be difficult to find a therapist—let alone parse the different labels, from therapists and counselors to psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and coaches. Each type of clinician undergoes a different form of training, and each has a slightly different focus and approach to helping their clientele. Understanding a few key differences can help you determine which mental health professional is right for you or your loved one. But before diving in, it’s worth mentioning that although learning about these distinctions can help inform your decision, you don’t need to be overwhelmed by the information or get bogged down in the weeds; what tends to matter most is the commitment to change and the connection you forge with a therapist. It’s important to find someone with whom you feel comfortable and with whom you can build a working relationship—this is what makes therapy healing and transformative. The Differences Between Psychologists, Therapists, and Counselors Psychologists, therapists, and counselors may have different training and approaches, but they all treat mental, emotional, and behavioral health; they all have obtained an advanced degree, hours of training, and licensure. Psychologists A psychologist has a doctoral degree, such as a doctorate in philosophy, a Ph.D., or a doctorate in psychology, a Psy.D. A psychologist’s training may delve more deeply into the science, theory, and practice of psychology and human behavior. They may be more likely to treat severe mental illnesses such as psychosis or personality disorders. They can conduct psychological and neuropsychological testing. Outside of a clinical context, a psychologist may also be a researcher in an academic or institutional setting. https://lnkd.in/du_dSipN
