Decarbonising the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) in Western Australia is essential as we work towards a stable, sustainable energy future. A pivotal component of this transition is Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Earlier this week, Urbis and the project team were very pleased to receive approval for the Kemerton BESS on behalf of Trinasolar and Westsun Energy. We had to respond to some significant late challenges and last-minute legislative changes, and we could only have done it with Dale Newsome's expertise and guidance. This innovative project will transform a depleted sand mine into a valuable resource, helping to reduce environmental impact while improving grid stability and reliability. The BESS seeks to utilise underground transmission lines to preserve the natural landscape and protect local ecosystems. This project is a prime example of how adaptive reuse can promote sustainable progress and environmental stewardship and will serve as a benchmark. The BESS will significantly enhance grid stability and reliability by balancing supply and demand. These systems store surplus renewable energy and release it when necessary, guaranteeing a steady electricity supply, even with the variable nature of solar and wind power. By addressing the fluctuations associated with renewable energy sources, the BESS will enable greater adoption of clean energy within the grid, reducing reliance on fossil-fuel-based peaking plants and decreasing carbon emissions. From an economic standpoint, the BESS will reduce the need for expensive upgrades to transmission and distribution networks, optimise energy expenses through energy arbitrage, and lower the curtailment of renewable energy. This not only maximises the financial feasibility of renewable projects in the region but also boosts the efficiency of our energy infrastructure. The approval is the culmination of several years of work behind the scenes by Mark Knox and, more recently, the preparation of the development application and supporting technical studies. The approval would not have been possible without our partners on the project, including Western Environmental, Shawmac Civil an Traffic Engineers, Brendan Oversby and Lloyd George Acoustics. It was a pleasure working with the Shire of Harvey throughout the process and a range of stakeholders in the state government, who assisted in working through various matters along the way.
Well done Dane and team. Kemerton has great potential and an energy project like this re-purposing a depleted sand quarry is clever thinking.
Great result by a stellar team!
Important work to support confidence in the sector!
Congratulations Dane and team on a great outcome for WA!
Great work Urbis - Westsun - Dale Job done !
Director at Western Environmental Pty Ltd
2wGreat outcome very well conceived and executed by Dane, Urbis and the broader project team. Credit for the hard work done on the environment side of things belongs to our team.
