“I'm passionate about growing and transforming companies to be prepared and healthy for the #future. I also love a vigorous day in the great #outdoors, and tasty meals prepared with #love.” 3) What Board(s) are you currently on, and how did you first find out about the opportunity(s)?
“I'm currently on the boards of Truthset (a #consumer data ratings business) and IRIS.TV (a #video data #connectivity business). Both businesses dramatically enhance the value of their clients' data. I joined the Truthset board after working with its founder for many years at a prior company, and I was originally an informal advisor to IRIS.TV.” 4) What advice would you give to someone trying to secure their 1st Board role?
“Advisory board roles (and even #nonprofit boards) can be a great way to break the ice and get you into the consideration set for traditional board roles. Also, don't be too picky about your first board role - getting the ball rolling is what matters. As new #opportunities arise (and they arise faster after the first one) you may upgrade the boards on which you serve over time.” 5) What’s your favorite quote?

Having served on multiple company boards throughout my career and continuing to do so, I’ve found it to be a rewarding experience. It’s a great way to network, and with the right match, you can leverage your expertise and experience to contribute to your company growth. Serving on a board can be both enjoyable and fulfilling. However, not all board experiences are the same. You should avoid certain risks before committing–even if the CEO or board chair is your friend. It was June 2019. I was on a call that would redefine my career... I took a deep breath and said the unthinkable: "We need to kill our events." Events were our sacred cow, our cash cow. The type of cow you don't kill. They generated 100% of our revenue 🫣 On the other end of the call was our Director of Ops. He said nothing. He probably thought I'd lost my mind. For five years, our 12 major fundraising events had been our crown jewels. They were wildly successful. But beneath the surface, something was deeply wrong. We had thousands of donors, yet we weren’t nurturing any of them. Our acquisition strategy was stellar. Our retention strategy? Nonexistent. It was time for a drastic change. My Director of Ops was skeptical. But he stood by me, and even became an advocate for the change in front of the team. So in 2019, we pulled the plug on our only revenue stream. We had a plan, but it would take 2-3 years to see results (if we lasted that long). 🥁 Here goes nothing 🥁 The first year? Revenue was down 9%. 📉 Don't panic. Stick. To. The. Plan. The second year? Revenue was up 30%. Bingo. 📈 The third year? Revenue was up 21%. Bingo again. 📈 I have been wrong in my career. A lot. But I was relieved to get this one right. Over the next three years, our revenue grew by 43%, and our donor retention rate doubled the industry average. --- In leadership, you will make thousands of decisions. But only a few each decade are truly "make or break." Get it right, and you win. Get it wrong, and you lose. No take-backs. When in doubt, trust your gut. Time will judge if you made the right call. Parting is such sweet sorrow ... but can we control the balance of sweet and sorrow? This article was written by a search consultant in the tech industry, so the concepts may not feel directly relevant for those of us who've lived life in the #charitable sector. Still, it's a good read for senior #leaders who are planning a transition. Most who work for #nonprofits don't expect to be fired on the spot when they say they're leaving, but it can happen, especially if the relationship with their manager was unpleasant to begin with. The fact that it's rare doesn't mean it's impossible, and I've always had a Plan B just in case. I've also been exceptionally fortunate to have #managers with whom I could be open that I was competing for another job, which I've discovered is rare. The most important strategy here is to deeply understand the #culture and norms of our #organization and the rapport we've established with our #supervisor. I haven't always been able to choose my manager, but I place that chemistry near the top of my list when deciding where I want to work. In fact, I consider that factor no less important than pay, title, and responsibilities, because I've seen how miserable a dysfunctional manager can make their direct reports. Giving notice can be hugely consequential in reinforcing our #reputation - that personal brand that can entice or repel a future employer. Especially in #highereducation #advancement, the world gets smaller as our careers progress, so being attentive to #integrity, #accountability, and #reliability is vital. I like the author's three #executive prototypes of departing, but I suggest being attentive both to timing and relationships. In considering timing, I left my last role because I had completed the task I was nominally brought in to do: plan, launch, and close their first comprehensive fundraising campaign. I knew I wouldn't be there long enough to complete the second campaign, so I wanted to make way for someone else to start that process. To preserve relationships, I was explicit and clear with #stakeholders about what I would accomplish in the time between my announcement and my departure. I didn't check-out, and I pushed back against those who tried to sideline me. I left with my to-do list done, having spent every last bit of my political capital, knowing it wasn't transferable or useful after I left. I can't even imagine using the "scattershot" approach the author describes. It can take years to build a strong reputation, but only a small fraction of that time to destroy one.

"I know James Groves" Someone (who I didn't know) said this to me last week. They were convinced, I pushed them on it a little and nope they were still convinced they knew me, knew I was MD of Indigo Swan, know about some recent successes such as being named a finalist for SME Director of the Year at the Institute of Directors (IoD) Awards and a few other bits. I was like "what a great guy", they were like "yeah the best". I then politely pointed out that I was indeed James Groves. There was a brief silence, a little awkwardness and then a lot of laughter. So why did this person think they knew James Groves? Well after speaking it became apparent that this person had engaged with my content here and had followed for sometime, I was known within their business in a positive way and that based on this they had a sense of knowing me. Whilst giving this some thought over the last few days, it has made me feel grateful that people have taken the time to read my content, that people in other businesses view me in a positive light and that social media can be something that can truly help to build your brand, your business brand and allow you to find what all businesses want in the right way and that is growth. From finances, reputation, staff and your offering, growth is key to surviving in this current landscape that we live. As MD of our wonderful business I take great pride in putting myself out there. People will say, well that's you James, that's your character and to a point that's true, but it also takes effort, commitment and time, all things that take focus and willing. Business Leaders need to be seen, inside your business, outside your business and across the sector you work in. To this point, the part I was most proud of, is that said person above was from the Energy Sector. What don't I post a lot about? Energy!! What was her opinion of me and our business, extremely positive and respectful. Having a view on something, is better than having no view at all.
