Many people assume that being Emirati means automatic wealth, but Ali and I are proof that this is not always the case. We work hard for everything we have and have had to rely on ourselves since we were teenagers to provide for our families. It is important to dispel this misconception and stereotype and show that success and wealth come from dedication and hard work, regardless of nationality. 12 years ago, I got on a TEDx stage. My palms were sweaty, knees were weak, arms were heavy. Fortunately, I didn’t have spaghetti the night before. However I was definitely wearing a sweater. 😉 TEDxRhodesU: Africa Inspired. It was my first time speaking in front of an audience, let alone on a TEDx stage. As a TEDx speaker, you’re expected to: - Deliver a cohesive message under pressure - Capture and captivate the audience - Share ideas worth spreading What I actually did: - Let my nerves take over - Spoke too fast just to get it over with - Didn’t prepare enough to feel comfortable 3 Things I wish I had done: - Paid more attention to my speed, tone, and body language. - Practiced, practiced, and practiced some more. - Simplified the content to focus on key points. Children need our help! Their healthy development depends on these top 5 things: → connecting → talking → playing → a healthy home → community. All of this helps their brains and thus reach their full potential. So what’s something we can do that can really make a difference? Scientists call it SERVE & RETURN. That’s a grown up way of saying: connect, talk and play with kids. And here’s the really big news: ↳ copycat games build imagination and empathy ↳ naming games build vocabulary and attention ↳ games like peekaboo build memory and trust. Each time we: → talk to kids → play with kids → make them laugh it not only builds and strengthens their relationships and mental health, it actually teaches them some of the most important life skills: ↳ from making friends to ↳ taking the test, to ↳ getting a job, to one day, ↳ maybe even start a family of their own.
