This week I read the article in AdExchanger about Why Publicis is Winning. https://lnkd.in/ef8qpFi7 In it, the author lists: 1. Bold technology strategy (Publicis bought Epsilon for $4.4bn in 2019) 2. Progressive Leadership 3. Smart deal making as the 3 key ingredients he believes are the root of our new business success. I'd have to agree, to two out of the three, at least. When I came on board in 2021 to help clients and prospective clients realise the power of Epsilon and how an ID and data-led approach would be key to their growth, in new business pitches, I had the leadership of the exceptional Nagmeh Taheri to guide me and help me to drive that collaboration within our businesses. Naggy's Progressive Leadership put into practice what enabled us to be the best. As Terence Kawaja says in his article: " The Power of One centralised platform federates data to all Publicis agencies. This strategy creates a great narrative in pitches for global marketing contracts which helps explain Publicis' extraordinary win rate". Today, she is off to sprinkle her magic elsewhere. IPG Mediabrands are so lucky to have her. Thanks for everything Naggy; you are living proof that nice guys (or girls) do not come last. Best of luck in your new chapter.

This week (Nov 12th) was 17 years since I accidentally ended up in media Many people in the agency world hop around. Zero judgement. That was never my thing. 2 agencies, 12 years - and then Quan. I spent 7 years at my first shop - Zenith Media. 7 years = 50 agency years essentially. Why so long in one place? Check out this photo below. Two of the best bosses I've ever had - and a co-worker who got me through some years where I really wasn't quite thrilled with the channel I was working in. It's the people. It's always the people. This is just a microcosm of why I stayed at Zenith for 7 years. We had a helluva group that made work not feel like work. You not only spent weekdays with these people - you spent weekends. Couple that with great leadership + amazing clients, why ever leave? We're in a group chat together and talk almost everyday - but haven't all been together in 3+ years. Paul Lenhart changed all that. It was time. I love these people - and I love that I found this industry. Happy Friday! Rob’s post is so right. Being a successful CMO is very, very hard. Having worked with CMOs ( and their demanding CEO bosses) for 35 plus years, I clearly know why this is true. It is because you need to get so many complicated things right to win. And you need to get them all right. 1. You need to be driving a brand that has strengths that the world needs more of. 2. You need to get the marketing and brand strategy right. 3. You need the right partners to develop a brilliant campaign and to execute it flawlessly. 4. You need a supportive organization and proper funding. 5. You need good data and presentation skills to prove what’s working to stay funded. 6. You need to be a good leader but also good with people and modest enough to not become a target. 7. You need a strong CEO who believes in brand building, and in you! 8. You need some time. 9. And you need a little luck to get all this to work no matter how brilliant you are. And one last thing. 10. If you are blessed to get 1-9 right, and your business is growing, you need to do it all over again year after year. To keep going up, you need to make the campaign better each year. Being a CMO is hard, but if you find a good one, he or she is invaluable. I worked with some great ones over the years on brands like VW, Titleist, Hershey, Jack Daniel’s, Ocean Spray, Fidelity, Citizens Bank, Huntington Bank, Reese’s and Royal Caribbean. CEOs need great CMOs. Great advertising agencies need great CMOs too. 🙏☘️

AD UNBLOCKED Publicis dropped their 3Q #earnings yesterday, and gave us all some good signs for the #advertising economy. Their net revenues were up 5.6% across the board - after some uneven years in the mAd business, this is welcome news; perhaps most especially for Europe, which following some quite lean years, offered nearly 5% YoY growth. However, as I've said for some time, the greatest growth for this global ad player was in the three regions boasting the world's fastest growing economies: APAC, Middle East/Africa & LATAM. Those of us who enjoyed the benefits of growing/maturing ad economies over the last decade need to learn that real growth in the decade ahead will NOT come from our own back yards. For my friends in America or Europe looking for the NEXT great areas of truly explosive growth, my strong advice is to venture beyond the edges of your home field.
