One in five kids in America faces hunger. For children who rely on free or reduced-price meals at school, summer can be the most challenging time of year. A recent survey revealed that 41% of parents struggle to provide food for their household when kids are out of school. Without proper nutrition during the summer months, it becomes even harder for kids to return to school ready to learn. I am humbled to help drive this great cause for Share Our Strength, No Kid Hungry, and Chefs Cycle. Whether through community meal programs, food banks, or by simply raising awareness, we can ensure that no child goes hungry. The British philosopher John Gray wrote, “We are who we are because of the places in which we grow up, the accents and friends we acquire by chance, the burdens we have not chosen but somehow learn to cope with. Real communities are always local-places in which people have put down roots and are willing to put up with the burdens of living together..." Places, roots, accents, friends, loyalties, caring, burdens & responsibilities. An authentic & organic community is held together by a set of first principles or virtues and values just like a built structure is supported by a firm foundation, by brick and mortar, stone & concrete, by sets of columns & beams etc. In the case of the physical structure, remove the supports and the structure will come tumbling down, collapsing under its own weight into a pile of rubble. The same is true of organic communities which are also like structures, built with effort, care, love and compassion over long spans of time, held in place by the firm supports of human values and the glue of human relationships. Without love, caring and compassion, without commitment, without the willingness to shoulder duties & responsibilities, local communities cannot survive, cannot thrive. Keep up the good work.

Hunger never takes a break––and neither does our mission to end it for kids. It’s a passion that drives our partnerships with West Michigan community heroes like Hand2Hand as they strive to eliminate the 68-hour nutrition gap each weekend presents for many children. According to Feeding America West Michigan, one in eight kids faces hunger––that’s nearly 65,000 students in West Michigan or roughly 834 full school buses! While breakfast and lunch may be served at school through national programs, access to healthy meals often stops when children are dropped off at home on Friday afternoon. That’s when Hand2Hand steps in. This organization mobilizes schools, churches, people and businesses like Amway to pack and distribute backpacks brimming with nutritious food like three breakfast items, four snacks and three-to-four lunch and dinner options, often with a recipe. One backpack at a time, this community powerhouse secured more than 4 million food items valued at $2 million to support nearly 15,000 students at 280 schools in 44 West Michigan districts. And that’s just last school year! More hands means more impact. In 2023, Amway invested $2.8 million to benefit more than 100 nonprofit champions like Hand2Hand right here in West Michigan, where we first put down roots. Supporting the communities where we do business has always been at the heart of our story.
