Staff engineers at Meta or Netflix are making $400,000+ 😅🤯 Why don’t we all just become staff engineers then? 👇 Can I just get hit 8-10 yrs experience and then get the staff title? If it was that easy, we’d probably all be that level... It takes extreme focus, mentoring, training, and real drive to continue leveling up all the way to a staff level. Alright… So what does a staff engineer look like? Glad you asked. 🙋♀️🙋♂️ At a startup, staff engineers will usually be responsible for influencing and technically leading several teams. In a larger organization, they may be staffed to one larger team with 10-25 engineers. They closely partner with engineering managers and product managers to co-own the success of the engineering culture, technical solutions, and systems across the team(s) and various projects. Where they differ mainly from a senior engineer is expanded influence and scope. 🤝 At this level, staff engineers work on solutions dealing with large, very complex and important technical and business systems. 🧠 They set the standard for all other engineers in the organization. ✅ Here are 7 characteristics that staff level engineers should be known for: 1️⃣ Ship and model the highest quality of work 2️⃣ Influence the org’s culture around best practices in testing, rollouts, monitoring, scaling, etc. 3️⃣ Spot pain points or weakness in technical or organizational systems and propose and lead solutions 4️⃣ Lead complex projects with clear deliverables and milestones that may span multiple years 5️⃣ Leverage cross-functional leaders in design, product, security, data science, to work towards team goals/projects 6️⃣ Give strong technical / business communication both oral and written 7️⃣ Provide mentoring, technical interviews, onboarding, documentation - things that help the team level up Staff engineers may actually code less than mid level engineers, but their influence and scope of work will be much larger.
