Little by little we see more and understand more what is going on in our soils. Interesting how the Canadian Light Source were used to see how the carbon attaches to the minerals in the soil. "To my knowledge, this is the first direct evidence of mechanisms through which organic enhancements improve soil health, microbial diversity, and carbon sequestration." 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗺𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗽.: 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 All species of 𝑆𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑚𝑢𝑠 are considered novel, except for 𝑆𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑚𝑢𝑠 𝑣𝑎𝑐𝑢𝑜𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑠. The Czech Republic's opinion on the novel food status of 𝑆𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑚𝑢𝑠 sp. has been published following a consultation request pursuant to Article 4 of Regulation 2015/2283. This opinion reviewed the history of use of the green microalgae 𝑆𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑚𝑢𝑠 spp. and found that 𝑆𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑚𝑢𝑠 𝑣𝑎𝑐𝑢𝑜𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑠 demonstrated significant consumption prior to May 1997, thus it is not considered novel. However, the dried biomass of other unicellular freshwater microalgae species (𝑆. 𝑎𝑐𝑢𝑡𝑢𝑠, 𝑆. 𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑑𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑑𝑎, 𝐷𝑒𝑠𝑚𝑜𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑚𝑢𝑠 𝑠𝑢𝑏𝑠𝑝𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑠, 𝐷. 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑠, 𝑇𝑒𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑚𝑢𝑠 𝑎𝑙𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑠, 𝑇. 𝑑𝑖𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑝ℎ𝑢𝑠, and 𝑇. 𝑜𝑏𝑙𝑖𝑞𝑢𝑢𝑠, referred as 𝑆𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑚𝑢𝑠 sp.) do not have a proven history of significant consumption before 15 May 1997 in the EU, and are therefore classified as novel foods. #NovelFood #Scenedesmus #FoodRegulation #Microalgae

Last week, I had the opportunity to present on the benefits of Acadian’s Seaweed Extracts. I always find these talks exciting, as they highlight the three systems that benefit from seaweed extracts in ag: soils, plants, and humans. For soils, these extracts promote increased microbial activity, biomass, and plant symbiosis with AMF and Rhizobium, enhancing both chemical and physical soil characteristics. I strongly believe that growing healthy plants begins with cultivating healthy, thriving soils. The benefits for plants are equally impressive, with increased root growth, nutrient use efficiency, and abiotic stress tolerance, among other advantages. Ultimately, these soil and plant improvements – regenerative agriculture in action – provide long-term benefits to us all. What I appreciate most about Acadian products is their versatility; they perform well across diverse soils, environments, and crops. Discover the magic of turning Canna indica into valuable hydrochar through a process called Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC). 🌡️💧 Using different temperatures (200°C-260°C) and liquids (water, CaCl2, NaOH), this study shows how we can get almost 100% of phosphorus out of plants, especially with NaOH, turning it into a form that's great for soils.
