Was talking to one of my partners/clients yesterday at one of the so-called 'Big Four' firms. At some point during the conversation my interlocutor, one of the leaders of their learning and development practice said (and I paraphrase): "We like you and use you because you're easy to work with." Boom. I've posted about this before, and will say it again for anyone trying to make their mark in a noisy and stressed world: Be easy to work with. It's the single most important 'career hack' you can apply in this world, regardless of your industry. Be easy to work with. I want to walk into every graduation at every university in the world and shout it at all those young guns eager to join the workforce. I want to tell everyone looking to move up in their career or make a mark as a freelancer or consultant. Yes, the experience and/or knowledge must be top notch Yes, the work ethic must be strong Yes, the integrity and cultural sensibilities must be ingrained Yes, those formal education pieces of paper will come in handy But ultimately, all other things more or less equal, you will beat anyone based on how easy you are to work with. In fact, you'll even beat people who're slightly better, faster or more experienced than you, at least on paper. Being easy to work with does not mean hiding, toeing the line or being a pushover. Most people who are easy work with are so because they are confident in their abilities, know exactly what they are worth and are assertive without ever being aggressive. Calm, confident and in control. Simple, basic stuff but so powerful. Biggest career hack I know.
