Researchers from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, led by biochemistry professor Satish Nair and postdoctoral researcher Zeng-Fei Pei, have made a groundbreaking discovery in the creation of DNA-protein hybrids. By collaborating with scientists from the John Innes Centre in England, the team found a naturally occurring molecule that integrates nucleic acids and proteins, potentially revolutionizing precision drug development. This discovery simplifies the process of creating biohybrid molecules, which can bind to specific DNA or RNA regions, blocking disease-promoting processes like mutated gene transcription. The team demonstrated that two bacterial enzymes, YcaO and a protease, are responsible for converting peptides into these hybrids. By leveraging bacteria like E. coli, they can scale up production, speeding up future discoveries in targeted therapies. Our Dear PhD student Malihe Manteghi graduated today with a PhD degree on Medical Biotechnology after having accomplished a great study on the design of a gene delivery vector in the form a hybrid peptide. They have developed a novel novel method for preparing modified RNA, through the innovative use of engineered DNA polymerases. This procedure has significant advantages over the commonly available method. "Our method may lead to the development of therapeutics for the treatment of many diseases, including cancer and some genetic diseases caused by a malfunctioning or missing protein. It allows for the replacement of a missing or poorly functioning protein," says Hocek. Dear connections, I recently completed a TUBITAK 2209-A project titled "Synthesis, Characterization, and Cytotoxic Effects of Doxorubicin-loaded ZIF-8 and Investigation of Gene Expression." This work involved developing a drug delivery system, synthesizing Doxorubicin-loaded ZIF-8 nanoparticles, and analyzing their cytotoxic effects along with the impact on gene expression. I had the great pleasure of presenting this research to esteemed jury members and fellow researchers at the İzmir Institute of Technology Science Festival.
