BUV COLLABORATES WITH UNIVERSITY OF STIRLING ON AI ASSESSMENT SCALE BUV recently participated in a knowledge exchange session with the University of Stirling, Scotland, focusing on the integration of AI in teaching, assessment, and research. Dr Mike Perkins, Head of the BUV Centre for Research & Innovation (CRI), led the session, discussing BUV’s work on the AI Assessment Scale, a framework designed to help academics deal with the challenges posed by the increasing use of Generative AI (GenAI) tools in education. The collaboration between BUV's CRI and International Office, along with the Partnerships team from University of Stirling, aimed to share the best practices from BUV with staff from the University of Stirling and its other partner institutions. The session was well-received by attendees, who engaged in a lively Q&A session and exchanged ideas on how to effectively integrate AI into their teaching and assessment strategies. Ms. Hien (Jenny) Nguyen, Head of the International Office at BUV shared, “We are delighted to have collaborated with University of Stirling on this important topic. The first International ORAN Symposium (#IORS) organized by #NTIA has been a valuable learning experience for me. Met several old friends and made many new. It was incredible to hear about need for repeatable, reliable, and consistent testing. ORAN adoption hinges on robust testing. To ensure so called "feature parity" with incumbent solutions, rigorous testing of conformance, function, and performance is essential. However, the cost and coordination required for comprehensive testing present significant challenges. The dynamics of various OTICs and the commercialization drive create a chicken-and-egg problem: testing is needed for adoption, but adoption is needed to justify investment in testing. To overcome these hurdles, collaboration is key. Academia can bring academic rigor to best practices, and new entrants may have an opportunity to innovate in this space. This article is a useful approach to Generative AI: with our critical thinking skills rather than our fears. I enjoyed this example 😊: "Programming is merely an extension of thought itself. I don't throw every frog I find in a stream to see if it can swim because I have programmed a useful message in my head, that frogs swim. It's called deduction." I also appreciated rethinking AI as a force of nature: "For Heidegger, technology should be considered the way that Ancient Greeks saw it, most especially in the brilliant inventions of thinkers like Hero and Archimedes, as unity with nature, a gathering and concentration of the force of nature rather than something contranatural, imposing and violent." And the truth that "Deep fakes are not a technological problem, they are a human problem." This article is a great way to begin rethinking Generative AI, especially as a force of nature.
Rather than looking at GenAI as something that is going to fundamentally disrupt learning and what it means to be human, I see it more as an enhancement of thought along the continuum of technological advancement, something which has always driven humans further up the taxonomy of critical and creative thinking.
