India, Tata Group, semiconductors & Assam: Tata lays the groundwork for its new chip packaging unit at Morigaon in Assam. This step is significant since Assam and more so the overall Northeast development potential is untapped. The establishment of a factory by an industry leader sparks the creation of a comprehensive ecosystem in the vicinity, including primary, secondary, and tertiary vendors. A prime example is Maruti starting its factory in Gurgaon during the early 1970s. I strongly feel there needs to be micro industrial pockets in different parts of India which will be more sustainable, economically viable, and de-clog few of the urban centers. And great to see Tata taking this initiative. The icing on the cake is that Assam has a favorable weather and currently when most of the India is sweltering under heat, even the plains of Assam are at least 5-7 degree Celsius cooler. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, formerly known as Aurangabad, is renowned for the Ajanta and Ellora Caves, UNESCO World Heritage sites that showcase ancient rock-cut architecture. The city developed into an industrial hub and was once recognized as the fastest-growing city in Asia- courtesy Bajaj Auto & other industries growth. However, it encountered challenges in maintaining industrial growth at later stage. While there was some development in industrial areas- Waluj and Shendra, along with a rise in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, these were not significant enough to drive substantial growth for the city. The establishment of AURIC (Aurangabad Industrial City) in 2019 under the DMIC (Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor) did not immediately accelerate growth. The city required larger investments to create robust & sustainable growth. This much needed critical investment eventually materialized very recently with contributions from Toyota, Lubrizol, and JSW, amounting to $6.5 billion (₹54,200 crore). This investment will enable industrial, infrastructure developments & technological advancement creating local supplier ecosystem. Overall, Toyota’s investment is poised to transform Aurangabad into a significant hub for automotive manufacturing and green technology, contributing to the region’s long-term economic and social development.
