Tackling litter in Stratford-upon-Avon alongside Rubbish Friends! 🤝
Our recent litter pick, in collaboration with Rubbish Friends, revealed important findings about local waste hotspots and highlighted opportunities for important change 🔎.
During the event, we identified several major litter hotspots, including hedges, bushes, and drains, which had accumulated significant waste, particularly following recent heavy rainfall. Tourist-heavy areas near the canal and hotels are also prone to littering, posing risks to the environment and potentially harming the reputation of Stratford-upon-Avon ❌.
Takeaway packaging was the most common type of litter, often found far from its source. This highlights the need for targeted collaborations with fast-food chains to reduce litter, support their corporate social responsibility goals, and promote community clean-up efforts. Additionally, packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (pEPR) compliance fees could be used to fund campaigns aimed at addressing drive-through consumer behaviour, reducing waste at its source, and encouraging responsible disposal 🗑️.
Looking ahead, we plan to work alongside Rubbish Friends to compare these results with future litter picks to identify trends in waste types and hotspots. This data will support the development of targeted awareness campaigns, such as educational talks in schools to inspire younger audiences and the placement of informative signs in key areas to raise awareness of the environmental impact of littering 🌳.
