🎉 Yesterday, we had a blast engaging with Lochaber High students along with Mowi Scotland through a Kahoot! quiz as part of our celebration for Scottish Apprenticeship Week! Thank you to our colleagues, James Tangney, Lead Engineer and Stephanie Cumming, our HR Assistant and Advisor, for representing us. It was fantastic to share insights about the diverse career opportunities and pathways that we collectively have along with our sister company JAHAMA Highland Estates, showcasing what is available here in Lochaber. The questions were a hit, providing an interactive way to share fun facts and information. Check out some of the example questions we asked below. Let’s see what you would have answered❓ 1.🤔An Olympic sized swimming pool holds 2.5million litres of water. Our Hydro Power Station has a water flow of 45m3/s. How quickly could we fill this? 1. 10 seconds 2. 120 seconds 3. 55 seconds 4. 250 seconds 2.🤔True or false. You can drive a double decker bus through the tunnels that connect our reservoirs to the Power Station? 3.🤔How many homes could our Power Station power? 1. 10,000 2. 5,000 3. 3,000 4. 100,000 Our apprenticeship opportunities are open until 31st March, contact [email protected] for all further information and to apply. Modern Apprenticeships you can apply for include: ✅Electrical Engineer ✅Mechanical Engineer ✅Trainee Stalker Graduate Apprenticeships you can apply for: ✅Chemical Engineer ✅Procurement Assistant #ScottishApprenticeshipWeek #ScotAppWeek24 #CareerPathways #InteractiveLearning #FortWilliam #Lochaber

Meet Veronica. While on maternity leave, and after 14 years working in retail, she took a leap of faith and started a journey that took her to Cadent. We are SO glad she did. This International Women in Engineering Day #INWED24 we’re celebrating fantastic engineers here at Cadent. Engineers like Veronica Kandekore, in our East of England Network. “I started having a think about what I liked to do and what was in demand,” said Veronica. “I’ve always been very good with my hands, so I thought that maybe plumbing and heating would be a great career to look into.” Veronica enrolled on a course at Enfield College and began learning the trade that would lead her to Cadent – although it didn’t come about in quite the way you may have expected. After gaining her qualifications, Veronica began searching for an appropriate apprenticeship but was constantly being passed over, which was becoming a frustration. “One day I saw a Cadent van promoting vacancies, so I thought I’d take a look. There was a role in maintenance which I thought I’d be right for, so I applied. “During the interview, I became aware that I wasn’t going to get the job, but instead of being shown the door, the interviewers told me about the Cadent apprenticeship scheme and how they thought that my experience would make me a suitable candidate. “There aren’t too many businesses that would turn you down for a job but see enough potential in you to suggest a gateway to a whole new career. “I took onboard everything that was said, applied, and in November 2022 I joined the intake of apprentices.” So, what advice would Veronica offer to other people considering such a career change? “Don’t give up! I’m 41 now and I’d advise anyone to just follow their dreams, and nothing should stop you. If you work hard, then you can achieve exactly what you want.” Cadent’s future talent programme offers a range of tailored training programmes and apprenticeships for anyone looking to start their engineering career. Here’s how your typical #apprenticeship in #Germany, #Switzerland or #Austria results in us having some of the BEST 💥 tradespeople worldwide: 1. 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 🧑🎓 (around age 15 / 16) —> high school (Gymnasium) is NOT compulsory. Only about 20%-40% (depending on region and country) of pupils attend high school to pursue an academic career down the road 2. 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 ⚒️ (3-4 years): structured and nationally recognised apprenticeship program that combines practical work at a company (usually 2-3 days / week) and classroom schooling. Here’s an example of the skills a #carpenter usually has right out of his apprenticeship at around age 19/20: https://lnkd.in/emf98_-N 3. 𝗠𝗲𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 / 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗿 after a couple of years on the job one can go on to get a Meister (Master Tradesperson), focussing more on people and worksite leadership. Alternatively, a “Techniker” (Technician) is more focused on Project Management and Office work. Both are Bachelor Degree equivalents. 4. 𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 / 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 In the Swiss / German / Austrian system one can always decide to go the academic route at a later point in time (e.g after 5-10 years on the job). I’ve met several carpenters / masons etc. that went on to become Engineers and Architects. I’m not saying other countries don’t have incredible professionals in the #trades and in #manufacturing. The big difference is: our system helps educate great trade professionals predictably and at scale 📈 while others rely on unstructured “on-the-job” learning. How do your countries manage the education of tomorrow’s #construction and #manufacturing talent?

Great article from the Daily Herald: General Motors Plant Director Anton Busuttil, MS had this to say about #skilledtrades #careereducation “Cultural stigmas around skilled trades and expectations to follow the traditional route of a four-year college degree program certainly contribute to the problem. However, the most significant issue I see is the lack of understanding that prospective workers have of what skilled trades careers truly are and the benefits they present, coupled with a lack of exposure and access to the pathways needed to turn interest into an actionable career plan”. https://lnkd.in/gqKefugX

As we face an acute labour shortage in the skilled trades, now more than ever, investing in apprenticeships is not just good business—it’s essential. The recent Procore Groundbreak Conference underscored how workforce development is the foundation of innovation and resilience in construction. A critical takeaway: addressing the labour gap starts with empowering the next generation of trades professionals through mentorship, training, and opportunity. Here in BC, Apprenticeship Recognition Month celebrates the record-breaking 15,000+ apprentices currently training across over 65 skilled trades programs. This is a testament to the growing momentum in trades education, supported by initiatives like SkilledTradesBC and increased government funding. With more than 83,000 skilled trades jobs expected in BC over the next decade, it’s clear that fostering apprenticeship programs is vital to building not just infrastructure but a stronger, future-ready workforce. At Houle, we take pride in mentoring apprentices, ensuring they gain the skills and certifications that not only enhance their careers but also strengthen our industry as a whole. Apprenticeships don’t just fill jobs—they create leaders. This November, let’s celebrate the contributions of apprentices and their mentors while committing to expand opportunities. Together, we can shape a more sustainable, skilled, and innovative future for our province and beyond. #SkilledTrades #ApprenticeshipRecognitionMonth #Leadership #WorkforceDevelopment #ConstructionInnovation #GBK24

If 41% of people who enroll in college drop out, why are we allowing them in in the first place? There would be less college debt. There would be more people going to trade schools. Socienty valuing musular labor should be a good thing. Construction, plumbing, carpentry, electrical workers, mechanics for all machinery, industries that require licensing to work in the trades should be careers we encourage. Europe used to have internships for all sorts of trades. These models worked for years.
