Next week will be my last week in distribution. After 14 years building 3 successive distribution companies there are a few universal lessons I want to share: 1. Care about the customer. About the leaders, the employees, and the health of their business. Few people are loyal to companies that don't care about them. This cannot be faked. 2. It's a service business. When building a distribution business, don't lose sight of the fact that your business exists to serve contractors. Build the business in a way that supports and elevates the contractor. 3. Make it fun. Moving products from point A to point B can seem boring, but it's essential. You've got to bring energy and create memorable moments. (ie. Baywa's Business Leadership Summit in a couple of weeks!)
