Perverse incentives, entrenched power imbalances, deteriorating career pathways, restricted funding, and health service pressures are breaking it further. " Two candid and forthright statements open another insightful editorial by Kamran Abbasi in this week's edition of the BMJ, as he announces the new Commission on the Future of Academic Medicine. An important initiative and, most certainly, an endeavour of paramount impact, because, indeed, "academic medicine isn’t just for careers and commerce; it is for people and the planet". Round 12 of the The Academy of Medical Sciences Professorships Scheme is now open: https://lnkd.in/eXtTY6v9 Our AMS Professorship awards are for a duration of up to five years and for a maximum of £500K. The financial support of the Academy will be offered during the initial three years of the award: up to £225K in Year 1; up to £175K in Year 2; and up to £100K in Year 3. The funds can be used flexibly, and are intended to support your research during the early years of your Professorship post. For example, they could be used to fund research assistance, research costs or equipment. However, the funds may not be used to contribute to the cost of your salary or personal expenditure. In addition, and for the full five year duration of the professorship, awardees will have access to careers support, and the Academy’s extensive networks across academia, industry and healthcare. The deadline for applications for Round 12 is 8th January 2025.

I really enjoyed this article in the ACGME Journal of Graduate Medical Education by Dr. Tom Montine, Chair of Pathology at Stanford, offering "Guidance for a Career in an Academic Medical Center." Lots of pearls like: "There is much work to be done in an AMC, and faculty quickly find themselves giving their total effort. At this point, the only way to increase useful effort is to reduce useless effort. This can be done by improving time management, suppressing needless anxiety, and understanding when and how to recharge. Research & Residency Match: Insights from UND Medical Students The UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences Medical Research Student Interest Group met to talk about how research experiences factor into residency applications. We heard from four 4th years who recently matched into highly competitive residencies. They shared their experiences and insights, along with a discussion based on the research by Wolfson et al. (doi: 10.1097/ACM.0000000000005256). Here are some key takeaways for #medicalstudents considering research: - Boost your competitiveness: Research is especially valuable for applicants aiming for the most competitive residencies. - Be prepared to discuss your research: Residency interviews often ask about your research experiences. Be ready to talk about your project's significance or at least your research exposure. This is also a great opportunity to showcase valuable skills sought by program directors. - Every accomplishment counts: Don't underestimate the value of your research products. Published papers are fantastic, but poster presentations and even submitted manuscripts showcase your dedication and effort. - Start early! Research takes time: Beginning research early in medical school allows you to participate in multiple projects and have ample time for publication and presentations. - Align your interests, explore broadly: Align your research with your career goals, even if the type of research is outside of the area you hope to match in.
