Today was the kickoff for our Tech Teddies Workshop powered by Brighthouse Financial! The making of a teddy bear is an algorithm in action. Students design, plan, and make their teddy bear. Before the students can begin to make their teddy bear, they must first design. This involves conceptualizing the animal’s appearance, shape, and features. Similarly, the same process happens in computer science when designing a software program or application. Once students design their teddy bear, they will walk through the algorithm (the step by step process) of making their teddy bear. Then once the bear is made, they will have options (variables) to accessorize the teddy bear to make it their own. The real world experience of seeing an algorithm in action creates relevance for students. And today, these students were able to do just that! Thank you to the 90 Brighthouse Financial volunteers and to the 160 kiddos that attended! The entire 5th grade class at Governors Village Stem Academy was able to attend. I am sharing with you a free resource for your teachers. Go to the website “The Innovation Destination” at https://lnkd.in/g-GuWeec. On the home page, scroll down to the four links. Click Here to Start Story-Game” will take you to the digital story-game, a children’s (gr.2-4) story that includes game elements. “Click Here to Learn More” and you’ll have access to all of the support materials developed for the story-game. A link to our promotional flyer, in case you’d like to share news of this unique and engaging set of resources to others. I attached the flyer to this email. A link to the Get SET! tool developed with funding from the Lemelson Foundation to help young children evaluate the resources they use throughout the invention process. The creators thought it was relevant to this project so they bundled it with the project resources. This is a great tool ready to use and important for any child learning to do research on line. There are also a set of unit/program plans and a best practice guide for educators who wish to develop programs around these resources or create their own resources. The authors and creators are very proud of these deliverables and now they are just trying to get the word out so people will use them.
