Wow. Just got off a Zoom call with a customer from 25 years ago, who is now in Belgium. What a cool (and successful) guy! (A quick history...) At the time, I was working for SGI/Cray and my mentor Alayne Gyetvai trusted this crazy young dude (me) to front-end a major new client in France. He was a director for Lyonnaise Cable, which is like Comcast in the US. They needed soup to nuts internet gear and setup for their new broadband offering for homes in Paris. It was a big deal! I didn't speak French. I knew enough tech to be dangerous. And I counted on the help of my colleagues a lot. (I was also lucky to be with the talented Cesar Gonzalez and have Kev N. working when we were sleeping in France. Phew) After a lot of back and forth, we closed a $250k hardware deal (a lot in 1997) and about $100k in consulting. We deployed a ton of custom offerings that didn't exist then. We were not the dominant hardware vendor. Sun was in a big way. However, they went with us. (Here's Why) Today, I learned from that gentleman, now in Brussels, that he liked the challenger. He liked that we were the underdog and small. He liked that we cared for them and listened. He liked that we had a different path and didn't sell at them. He also liked that we weren't a "me too" approach. (Wow) I was honored to hear this, because that's the ethos of how I always like to deliver tech and business solutions. And, I'm honored that this customer remembers me and that work 25 years later.
