The World Health Organization released guidance to improve the design, conduct and oversight of clinical trials. The document aims to reinforce global standards in the organization, design, conduct, analysis and reporting of clinical trials. The team at Expecto Health Science has gone through the guidance and noted that key recommendations focus on improving trial design to ensure the relevance of research; an emphasis on scientific and ethical standards; strengthening of capacity and support for sustainable research infrastructure; enhancing clinical trial transparency; and reforms to enable underrepresented groups to participate in clinical trials. John Stubbs AM delivered a powerful presentation on the consumer perspective in research at the ACTA Conference in Melbourne, December 2024. His talk, A Consumer View on Innovative Designs, underscored the vital role of consumers in codesigning clinical trials and research frameworks. Key points included: • The challenges of traditional research methods, such as Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs), including their strict inclusion criteria and high costs. • The growing need for software that supports both clinical staff and consumers to ensure equitable engagement. • The importance of culturally relevant and accessible patient materials to foster participation and trust. • Emerging trial designs like basket, umbrella, and platform trials, which focus on personalised medicine and adapt to evolving needs. Stubbs concluded with a call to action for mandated consumer involvement in research, co-designing solutions, and supporting innovative trials. In its recent report, Guidance for Best Practices for Clinical Trials, the World Health Organization advocates for the use of Core Outcome Sets in clinical trials. Core Outcome Sets represent a minimum set of outcomes that must be measured in all trials, ensuring consistency and standardization across studies.   Adoption of Core Outcome Sets: 🔹 Ensures outcomes important to patients and decision-makers are used in clinical trials. 🔹 Reduces research waste by having the same meaningful data across trials. 🔹 Promotes harmonization of clinical trials, thus fostering stronger evidence synthesis to inform policy and practice.   The Red Hat Group (RHG) fully supports the World Health Organization's recommendation, recognizing the transformative potential of Core Outcome Sets to advance the quality and impact of clinical research.
