❗ Watch out for CECAM ❗ A shift away from fossil fuels is urgently needed and, as efficient energy storage systems, batteries and supercapacitors may become key components in this "green energy transition". Over the course of the last decades, computer simulations have become a key element in the sustainable development of modern energy materials. A while ago four scientists – Christian Feiler from Hereon’s Institute of Surface Science, Mathijs Janssen (Norwegian University of Life Science), Robert Meißner (Hamburg University of Technology) and Céline Merlet (CIRIMAT - Université Toulouse III) teamed up to organize the CECAM Flagship Workshop “Electrochemical Interfaces in Energy Storage: Advances in Simulations, Methods and Models” which will finally take place from today to 21.06.2024 at the CECAM Headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. With Marc Vahnstiege, Simon Albers, Simon Wiemers-Meyer, Johannes Kasnatscheew, Markus Börner and Dominik Voigt, representatives of all three MEET research divisions - Cell System, Analytics & Environment as well as Materials - were together in Paris for the kick-off meeting of the French-German joint project HIPOBAT (High Power Batteries). The project involves six German partners such as Forschungszentrum Jülich, RWTH Aachen University, Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen, Technische Universität Braunschweig, Zentrum für Sonnenenergie- und Wasserstoff-Forschung Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) as well as MEET Battery Research Center. On the French side the scientists of the Université de Picardie Jules Verne (UPJV), LRCS - Laboratoire de Réactivité et Chimie des Solides, University of Toulouse 1, Institut des Matériaux de Nantes Jean Rouxel, Université de Technologie de Compiègne (UTC), CIRIMAT and Collège de France are researching the further development of high-performance #solidstatebatteries. 🔋 Many everyday battery applications require sufficient energy density combined with high performance in both charging and discharging modes ⚡ - a dilemma that the scientists want to overcome. Their aim is to develop batteries that can reduce the ecological, geopolitical and economic pressure on the field of electrochemical energy storage. To achieve this, the researchers are working simultaneously on new materials, new cell concepts and a better understanding of the aging process of #batteries. They are also focusing on the availability of resources. A technology without cobalt, nickel, graphite and lithium would protect the environment, reduce pressure on politics and strengthen the Franco-German economy. The #HiPoBat project will run for three years and is supported by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung. 🙏

⚡🚗 Professor Antti Karttunen and Dr. Kevin Conley at Aalto University and Professor Eric Toberer at Colorado School of Mines are utilizing LUMI supercomputer in their international collaboration project that accelerates the discovery of materials for clean energy and zero-emission vehicles. The opportunity to create a new partnership came through the Finland-Colorado research collaboration call opened by CSC. This is the 3rd blog in series that represents collaboration projects between Finland-Japan and Finland-Colorado that use LUMI supercomputer to address global challenges and top-level research topics in different fields. Last week, we were able to participate in a remarkable seminar organized by the CEA-Leti in Grenoble on the crucial issue of taking into account the #planetaryboundaries model in our daily practices! 🎉 It still needs to sink in, but I am a doctor now! 🎓 Only last week on the 21st of March 2024, I successfully defended my joint PhD titled: "A user-centric analysis of preferences and performance of speed pedelec commuting in Flanders". 🚲 During my dissertation, I shared my scientific insights based on the first scientific data sets on speed pedelecs in Flanders and proved certain key misconceptions about speed pedelec wrong. #speedpedelecs #research 🧠 I want to thank my two excellent promotors: Jan Cappelle and Lieselot Vanhaverbeke. Also, a heartfelt thank you to my jury committee: Tony Wauters, Marc Juwet, Thierry Coosemans, Chris Tampère, Annick Roetynck & Frauke Behrendt. Success of our researchers in the Young II PW IDUB competition. Among the 55 researchers from the Warsaw University of Technology who received funding in the Young II PW competition, four are from our Faculty. The projects of our scientists that have been accepted for implementation: 1. Development of an innovative reformer chamber for the use of CO2-neutral synthetic fuels in high-temperature fuel cells - Olaf Dybinski Dybiński, PhD. 2. Dynamic interaction of a droplet with a moving surface - Michał Remer, PhD. 3. Analysis of LAES energy storage cooperation with variable temperature cryogenic cold storage - Aleksandra Dzido, PhD. 4. Enrichment and valorisation of biogas using a carbonate electrolyser - Arkadiusz S. (Szczęśniak), PhD. The aim of the YOUNG PW competition is to support the scientific development of young scientists, i.e. postgraduate students and employees of the Warsaw University of Technology engaged in scientific activities, who are classified as N and do not have a doctorate or whose doctorate is less than 7 years old. The value of the funded projects is almost PLN 600 000.
