📚What I Read This Week: “𝘙𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘢𝘶𝘯𝘢: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦, 𝘌𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘙𝘪𝘴𝘬𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘦-𝘌𝘹𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯” by Britt Wray, PhD 🧬🦣 This book offers a comprehensive overview of the science behind restoring extinct species, from cloning to CRISPR gene editing, and breaks down complex concepts into digestible insights for readers of all backgrounds 🧫🔬 She describes various de-extinction projects (though they’re all before Colossal Biosciences) and focuses heavily on the ethical and moral considerations of de-extinction. It was fascinating to see just how much the field has evolved since the book was published in 2017 (not too long ago!) It feels like Wray captures a moment when de-extinction was a bit more speculative, and comparing that to the progress that’s been made was really exciting. It was also notable to see many of the scientists who helped pioneer the field, and who continue to work within, featured in the book 👩🔬 For anyone curious about de-extinction, this book is an excellent starting point. It provides a balanced perspective that encourages informed discussion—a discussion I believe is crucial as we move forward in this groundbreaking work 🦤🌍 #DeExtinction #RiseOfTheNecrofauna #Books #Biotechnology #Bioethics #Conservation #Wildlife #Biodiversity #Nature

A newly discovered chimera gene, Booster, is unlocking new possibilities for addressing global food and energy challenges 🌍🧬 Researchers at the Center for Bioenergy Innovation at Oak Ridge National Laboratory have identified a gene that combines genetic material from three originally separated genes to supercharge photosynthesis. In field tests, poplar trees with Booster grew up to 37% taller with 88% more stem volume—and scientists saw similar results with different plants, indicating the potential for wider applicability to trigger higher crop yields for everything from bioenergy crops to food crops. https://lnkd.in/eChXe4qc
