So much of where I am today came from small, insignificant (at the time) decisions that, together, tell the story of my career. I’ve been in B2B marketing for 18 years - but this was never my plan. Here are 10 of those decisions that ended up being big catalysts for where I am today. 1 - Failed at computer science in college and switched my focus to business 2 - Joined the Marine Corps reserves for the GI bill after realizing I didn’t have a way to pay for college and didn’t want my mom to go into debt 3 - Met my wife and after 2 months of dating had a child on the way at 24 years old - kept me from moving to Vegas to be a resident DJ (yes, there’s an entire story behind this) 4 - Aspired to be a consultant, got offered to do a “website analytics” project with Expedia - had no idea what that was but was good with data. Got to learn from the guy who built Expedia’s homegrown platform. 5 - Spent years being a web analytics expert working with the major vendors like Webtrends and Omniture 6 - Moved my family down to Portland for a marketing data sciences job - after 1.5 years needed a way to move back to Seattle and got referred for a job as Director of Marketing Operations at Getty Images 7 - Joined Tableau as VP of Marketing Operations. Subsequently got fired 1.5 years later in a blindside political move - which started a full year of high anxiety and high blood pressure. 8 - Joined Metadata at the beginning of the pandemic - the riskiest decision in my career - leaving the security of large companies. Decided as a hedge, to grow my LinkedIn following in case it didn’t work out. 9 - Focused on my mental and physical health and built true confidence in myself that comes from the inside, not based on what people think of me. 10 - Started my own fractional CMO practice, expanding my knowledge and experience by getting to work with several companies at the same time. Career and life decisions are incredibly hard and often there’s no clear right or wrong. But here’s the way I think about them: I’m going to try and make the best decision I can possibly make, and then once I make that decision, I’m going to do everything I can to make that the right one :).

Why hire an analytics consultant if you already have a marketing agency? I get asked this a lot with potential clients. Marketing agencies often get tunnel vision in their areas of expertise. This is great for specific tactics but not for overall business impact. Relying on a marketing agency alone means: - There’s potential for bias in optimization recommendations - A lack of understanding of gaps between functions - Inefficient allocation of marketing budget All of the above = less ROI. When we are hired to support a marketing agency, it’s a marginal added cost. But we provide: Visibility and validation of what you’re already doing well →So clients can further enhance the most effective marketing efforts. Detailed analysis of how marketing interactions work together →So decisions are made based on the business impact, not specific channels. Clear and actionable reporting based on data from all marketing channels. →So clients can allocate their budgets more effectively. It’s a marginal additional cost for a big impact. Data analysts will ensure you can do what you do well even better. And find areas for improvement to make better decisions. - - - PS - We help turn digital data into impactful actions.
