It is difficult to overstate the importance of this report, widely considered one of the seminal documents in the field of modern public health. The report ushered in the nation’s antismoking campaign, an uncoordinated series of educational initiatives, public policies, media campaigns, and cessation services produced by public and private sector individuals and organizations, some for profit, others not, with the intent of encouraging adults to quit smoking and young people not to start. The report also produced an important contribution to the broad field of public health, developing a set of criteria for concluding from epidemiological data whether the association between an exposure and a disease was causal. That was crucial for the report itself. The committee had to determine when the relationship between smoking and a specific disease was causal and when the evidence was not strong enough to draw that conclusion. The criteria uponwhich the committee settled have served the entire field of public health ever since. Press coverage of the report had an immediate and substantial impact on smoking. Cigarette consumption dropped by a remarkable 15% in the three months following issuance of the report. By year’s end, the decline for the year had retreated to 5% as the shock of the report wore off and, perhaps more importantly, the behavioral and chemical addiction to the product resumed its powerful grasp on the smoking public. Even so, 1964 marked the beginning of the end. Prior to the report, adult per capita cigarette consumption – total cigarettes sold divided by the population eighteen years and older – had increased sharply and almost every year throughout the century, rising from 54 cigarettes at the turn of the century to 4,345 in 1963. It would never reach that level again. Beginning with the year of the Surgeon General’s report, adult per capita consumption decreased almost annually, falling steadily from the mid-1970s. In 2022 it had declined to 759 cigarettes, a number last seen exactly 100 years earlier in 1922 when cigarette smoking was relatively new. The year before the Surgeon General’s report, nearly one of every two adult Americans smoked cigarettes. Today, that number is one of every nine. 285p 2024 Univeristy California Health Humanities Press https://lnkd.in/gazWct3J

📢 New Canadian Alcohol Guidelines Integrated into Our Evidence-Based Brief Intervention Tool for Alcohol We've updated the Canadian version of our digital brief intervention to reflect the 2023 Canadian Guidance on Alcohol and Health by the Can Centre on Substance Use and Addiction / Centre can sur les dépendances et l’usage de substances. The guidelines, which emphasize that even small amounts of alcohol can be harmful, has sparked debate - posing a unique challenge for digital interventions. The goal of our digital brief intervention is to empower problem drinkers through normative feedback by calculating their unique drinking patterns, costs, calories, and risks compared to others. We were cautious in integrating the new guidelines as stating that "no alcohol is safe" could alienate users. Instead, we found a balance by presenting this information in a way that respects users' autonomy. Our digital tool, validated in clinical trials, has shown a 30% reduction in weekly alcohol consumption for those who use it. For more details, visit the study National Library of Medicine (NLM) (PubMed): https://lnkd.in/g2VqFwAH. We offer customized licensed versions for organizations, complete with branding and access to user statistics. New Zealand's Smokefree 2025 Action plan was launched yesterday by Associate Health Minister Casey Costello to much criticism from academics, public health advocates and parents. Costello's plan includes introducing new nicotine products that even her own advisors at the the Ministry of Health New Zealand have warned against. Stuff journalist Bridie Witton reveals "the Ministry’s January advice warned “children, adolescents and non-smokers are considered at high risk of dependence” to nicotine pouches, among other warnings such as the products being marketed to children overseas. "They also said the products were relatively new to the international market, and there was no good evidence to support their possible use an a reduced-harm alternative to smoking." "Costello, as a Cabinet minister, presents her own reports and recommendations to senior ministers, and specific information about the risk to children was not included in the report she took to Cabinet for approval in May." Vape-Free Kids NZ have written to all Cabinet ministers this week, to give them the MOH advice, and make sure they are aware that Costello failed to properly inform them. VFKNZ Co-Founder Charyl Robinson says: “Introducing highly addictive and harmful nicotine products to the market blatantly disregards the well-being of our kids, it only serves in the best interest of big tobacco." https://lnkd.in/gv4E7-Dw

In Feb 2024, our CEO Anne Marie Ward wrote this article on Minimum Unit Pricing in Scotland. It contains many links to informative articles written by many others critical of MUP. If you want to find out in-depth about it - you need to read this - bookmark for future reference. It’s all here! 👇 “It’s not too late to stop the MUP Pet Show” Out of the eight studies that did delve into health outcomes, the majority, seven to be exact, produced inconclusive results. Only the study conducted by PHS and the University of Glasgow, which was specifically mentioned in the press release and led by PHS’s public health advisor Grant MA Wyper, affirmed a reduction in mortality rates due to MUP. It’s critical to note that the “final report” seemingly reiterates the findings from the PHS and University of Glasgow study without presenting new evidence. Moreover, the independence of this study is questionable as it was commissioned by PHS and led by one of its advisors. And there’s much more…👇 https://lnkd.in/eycAC2TM #MUPfail #MUP #addiction #righttorecovery #backthebill #stopthedeaths #recoveryispossible

In the quest to mitigate the significant public health burden posed by regular alcohol use, the recent article titled "Exploring and Describing Alcohol Harm Reduction Interventions: A Scoping Review of Literature From the Past Decade in the Western World" by Sarah Perrin, provides insightful analysis. With alcohol being a predominant risk factor for disease, injury, and social harm, the article underscores the necessity of expanding our research and understanding of alcohol harm reduction interventions—an area less explored compared to illegal substance interventions. The scoping review conducted over the past decade showcases a commendable stride in dissecting various harm reduction strategies. Key achievements include a richer understanding of policy-driven interventions, educational programs, and community-based approaches that prioritize minimizing harm over total abstinence. The discussion is both timely and critical, given the evolving landscape of health priorities and the pressing need to innovate our methods to tackle alcohol-related harms effectively. This work not only enriches the scientific community but also offers invaluable insights for policymakers and health practitioners looking to implement evidence-based strategies. FANTASTIC news that South Australia is prioritising prevention by establishing Preventive Health SA. Working to prevent negative health outcomes is what our research is all about: By making the healthiest choice the easiest choice - through improving the healthiness of retail food environments. 🍏
🚨 Landmark legislation alert! 🚨 The Preventive Health SA Bill 2024 has passed in South Australia, establishing Preventive Health SA as a permanent part of the state's health system. This new legislation consolidates key prevention functions, including obesity, tobacco, mental health, and alcohol, under one agency. Recent achievements include stronger tobacco legislation and grant funding to support community organisations in advancing prevention efforts. 🌱👩⚕️ Read more about this important step towards better health outcomes for South Australians in the Australian Health Journal here: https://lnkd.in/gdfJyTpM #PublicHealth #Prevention #HealthPolicy #SouthAustralia #PreventiveHealth

Get on board with this new framework to address bullying, discrimination, and harassment in healthcare in Australia ===================== Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/gHevQH9z Watch the introductory video here: https://lnkd.in/ghmHVkuq ===================== Our comprehensive research paper, published in the July issue of The Lancet Regional Health - Western Pacific, offers a true opportunity to address the epidemic of bullying, discrimination, and harassment (BDH) in Australian healthcare settings with a nationwide framework. BDH is a significant, yet largely unmitigated risk to staff, patients, public health, and to organisations because its current handling is ineffective. We hope this paper will help bring healthcare leaders together with experts from non-medical fields to cut through barriers, bridge key gaps in expertise, design and implement necessary changes, and support all involved to effectively prevent and address BDH healthcare. ===================== Sincerely, the authors: Thomas Haskell, Jim Stankovich, Nancy Merridew
