Yesterday we had a great meeting with colleagues from UH Centre for Research in Psychology and Sports and UH Applied Psychology Research Group. We also had a fantastic discussion with colleagues from the mental health programmes in our School of Health and Social Work. Collaboration is essential for CRIPACC and we are looking forward to working with colleagues across schools in University of Hertfordshire. 👏

Youth mental health is a global priority, yet research on metacognitions and anxiety in younger populations is limited. This study found a moderate correlation (r = .312, p < .0001) between cognitive self-consciousness and anxiety in children and adolescents, with cultural and socioeconomic factors (e.g., power distance, masculinity, HDI) as key moderators. The findings highlight the role of cultural beliefs and national contexts in shaping youth mental health and underscore the need for more resources in the Global South. What research like this demonstrates, is that social environment is an estate of producing objects, artifacts, and ideologies that encourage, enhance, and amplify the anxiety response within the young developing mind. We must be more responsible with what we are putting out in the world. We must be more responsible with how we are producing content. We must be more responsible. , we have inflated freedom with “doing whatever I want“, we have invented a mythology that is endorsing the mental health breakdown of preteens. So even before they’ve even hit 13 years, kids have been ill equipped to deal with anxiety that should not be part of Social Interaction. #MentalHealthPsychology #BehavioralScience #Mindset #Teenager #Preteen #Harvard #Coach #Coaching #Anxiety #MentalHealth #Psychology

Here is an article, written by Jihye Kim, Dong-Gook Kim, and Randy Kamphaus highlighting (among other things) the urgency and benefit early assessment, diagnosis and detection of mental health issues. This can contribute to a few positive things, like fewer mental health problems and improved academic performance. Published in 2022, this may qualify as recent research, which is always a step forward and important in the world of psychology.

WHY MATTERING MATTERS: Creating an Ecosystem of Belonging at Your School “The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated” William James There is nothing so powerful as being seen. As knowing you matter. It is the greatest craving we have, our most primal need, what Dale Carnegie calls the “gnawing and unfaltering human hunger”. In fact, “mattering” is so important, it has become its own field of study, related to psychological well being and positive mental health. Mattering is believing that you make a difference in the world around you, that you make a difference to someone else. Here is how school leaders can ensure everyone in their community knows they matter: https://lnkd.in/gn6MKUAr

A Journey of Growth and Discovery in Psychology When I first applied to study psychology, I didn’t fully understand what it entailed. What began as a leap of faith has grown into a meaningful journey of learning, self-discovery, and passion for understanding the human mind. As a 400-level psychology student, I’ve come to appreciate the profound impact psychology has on individual lives and society as a whole. My academic path has offered me invaluable insights into the complexities of human behavior, emotions, and mental health. Through my coursework and a transformative internship in a psychiatric ward, I’ve gained hands-on experience in mental health care and witnessed the importance of empathy, active listening, and evidence-based interventions. These experiences have inspired me to advocate for accessible mental health resources and holistic care. Psychology has not only taught me about the minds of others but also about myself. I’ve learned to approach challenges with curiosity and resilience, qualities that continue to shape my academic and personal growth. I’m particularly drawn to fields like personality assessment and developmental psychology, where understanding individual differences can lead to meaningful change.

Couldn't agree more. Interdisciplinary collaboration is the best hope we have to address some of the complex and multifaceted domains in which we're working.
