The University of Hertfordshire's De Havilland campus really feels like an airport, with big open spaces and something that looks like a control tower next to a runway. But it is cold out there–please check in on anyone who may struggle in cold weather. This is a good reference from our partners in Hertfordshire County Council about cold weather, updated on 18 Nov 2024: https://lnkd.in/eWdrZ6Ps

Check out this new research from #UWaterloo.
A new study from University of Waterloo researchers has found that older adults who live in southern U.S. experience heat symptoms much higher if access to air conditioning is too costly. The study’s findings lead the researchers to suggest policymakers mitigate extreme heat conditions and adverse health conditions for older adults by requiring air conditioning in all new residential home construction or by addressing the high costs of operating air conditioners. Two fundamental questions for governments, and other stakeholders after understanding the damaging effects of institutional and residential care are-what actions are we taking to transform the system of care, and how are we supporting young people who have exited that system and are already facing challenges as a consequence?

A number of high profile inquiries are making headlines at the moment, but are we learning the lessons from those that have gone before? This blog, written for the National Emergencies Trust by a member of their Survivors' Advisory Forum, highlights how quickly we can forget. Lessons can only truly be said to be learnt when they lead to changed behaviours or outcomes. https://lnkd.in/dfZShFJs

Like any societal problem, the loneliness epidemic is multifactorial. This absolutely brilliant analysis from Strong Towns both breaks my heart and gives me hope. One of DC's most under-utilized (and under-recognized) gems: USNA—where I've spent the last year honing my plant propagation skills as an ORISE fellow—is a national treasure. Here are some of the best things about it: 1) Vastly superior to the Tidal Basin for seeing cherry blossoms. Not only is it less crowded, it is also a repository for many species and hybrids of flowering cherries and plums. Instead of a one-week window you get weeks and weeks of incredible blooms, from the deep magenta of 'First Lady' to the sweet-smelling early bloom of (highly underrated) Prunus mume...and so many more. 2) The diversity of woody plant species and genera is mind-boggling. There is always something unusual and beautiful in bloom: camellias and witch hazel from fall through the middle of winter; snowbells, viburnum, azaleas, and aforementioned cherry/plum blossoms in spring; bigleaf magnolia in summer—and so much more! Not only is USNA a public garden, it's also a USDA germplasm repository for woody landscape plants, and an active plant-breeding and research institution. 3) Miles and miles of walking/biking paths that are never too crowded. 4) It's an oasis of green in the asphalt jungle of NE DC. 5) The amazing wildlife: stick insects, butterflies and moths, foxes and raptors, and access to the Anacostia!
This World Health Day, we highlight the role of the U.S. National Arboretum (USNA) in supporting the health and well-being of visitors and residents of Washington, D.C., and its surrounding areas. USNA is a valuable resource to the local community through its research, education, and extension activities. https://loom.ly/E1WVzJQ #WorldHealthDay2024 #MyHealthMyRight
