I’m excited to be invited to speak at the Urban Land Institute’s Annual Conference on October 23rd. This session will address some important questions, and I look forward to contributing to the discussion. 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗼𝗻𝗴’𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝘀: 𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 Long considered Asia’s vibrant hub, Hong Kong’s tourism industry finds itself at a pivotal moment. As even locals seek more attractive offerings across the border, the city is hard-pressed to step up its game and draw in regional and global visitors. The path forward requires bold vision and calculated investments. In a challenging market environment, what initiatives would be able to deliver tangible results? Are there existing resources that need to be leveraged better or are major investments needed? What will Hong Kong's tourism industry in 2030 look like and who can help us get there? At our recent Event “Unlocking Success: Navigating Investment and Export Ventures in Asia with Hong Kong as Your Strategic Hub” we spoke about the importance of Hong Kong as a Global Hub. After the insightful panel discussion, a hot topic came out during the Q&A session: Tourism. We are reminded of the profound impact of tourism on Hong Kong’s economy and business. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has dealt a severe blow to Hong Kong's tourism industry. With a significant decline in visitor arrivals, the city's role as a vital tourist hub has been affected. Before the pandemic, inbound tourism contributed approximately 3.5 percent to Hong Kong's total GDP, with leisure tourism being the primary purpose for nearly 60 percent of visitors. The close ties between Hong Kong and mainland China resulted in more than half of the annual travelers originating from the mainland. Even though some of these visitors did not stay overnight, their presence still generated essential revenue for the local tourism sector. Unfortunately, the impact of COVID-19 was undeniable. In 2020, the number of visitors plummeted, with only a fraction of arrivals recorded after February. However, there is hope on the horizon. In 2023, Hong Kong began to witness a gradual recovery, with approximately 34 million international visitor arrivals. While this marked a significant increase from the previous year, it still fell short of pre-pandemic levels. Find here the Results of the survey done by HKTB: https://lnkd.in/gpvscP4W The resilience and strength of Hong Kong's tourism industry will be paid back. As we continue to recover and rebuild, it is crucial to support and promote the revival of tourism in our city. Together, we can once again welcome visitors from around the world and showcase the unique offerings and experiences that make Hong Kong an exceptional destination and hub. #TourismRevival #HongKongTourism #RebuildingTogether

"What are Thailand / Singapore doing more successfully than Malaysia to attract tourists, and what lessons can be learned?" This question, or variants upon it, are frequently posited across South East Asia. Thailand is the most-visited country in the region, and Singapore is the most forward-thinking destination. Both are, therefore, understandably considered as benchmarks to emulate by competitor nations across this vast and diverse region. But focusing on and leveraging your own competitive strengths is the essence of marketing in any sector. South East Asian tourism was intensely competitive before the protracted Covid-era border shutdowns that re-set travel metrics almost to zero. Now, a monthly quest to rebuild those pre-2020 statistics is being played out highly visibly (especially in the media). This is ratcheting up competition to attract visitors and transition numerically from recovery to growth. So what happens next? It was a pleasure to join Sharaad Kuttan and Kam Raslan on BFM 89.9 - The Business Station's drive-time show to discuss the challenges in promoting and marketing a South East Asian destination at the midpoint of 2024. After the interview, the debate continues with listeners - and both presenters make some very astute comments about the current tourism landscape here in Malaysia. Well worth a listen.
