"Unveiling the Realities of the Fashion Industry: My Journey and Insights"
Inspired by a recent post from DietSabya, I want to share some thoughts on the glamorous world of fashion. The saying "All that glitters is not gold" fits this industry well. Behind the glitz, there's a dark side that often goes unnoticed. It's time for fashion enthusiasts to be aware of these realities before choosing this career path.
Compared to other industries, fashion is low-paying with high work pressure. There is intense competition, nepotism, politics, discrimination, unpaid internships, low-paying clients, and a shortage of jobs. The fashion industry in India is still growing, so many don't know about the various career opportunities available. Because of this, design students and their parents often expect immediate success, aspiring to be the next Manish Malhotra or Sabyasachi Mukherjee. This myth needs to be debunked for several reasons. Firstly, the competition is much tougher now. Secondly, most Indian customers are not willing to spend huge amounts on clothing. Thirdly, today's designers and customers are more conscious of the fashion industry's environmental impact, leading to a preference for slow, sustainable, and ethical fashion. Lastly, not everyone wants to be a glamorous designer in the film industry. Some want to explore other career paths, start small businesses, or work with local artisans in rural areas to promote Indian arts and crafts.
Personally, I've always been fascinated by the fashion industry. Despite these challenges, I am committed to being part of this community. I have a passion for teaching and have been involved in academics since graduating. For the future, I want to avoid unnecessary drama and the hectic lifestyle of big cities. I prioritize peace and plan to settle in a small city with decent exposure to the fashion industry, where I can thrive while continuing to teach fashion.
