Today's outstanding discussion in Brussels was hosted by The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities, entitled "Re-framing innovation policy: The dynamics between the R and I." This pivotal discourse—including Maria Leptin Magda Chlebus Alberto Credi Lars Frølund Alexandr Hobza Svein Stølen, and Ole Petter Ottersen—has fundamentally reshaped the narrative surrounding innovation and research, illuminating their intricate ties to the market and defense—an especially timely consideration. Yet, amid these insightful deliberations, one crucial aspect demands unequivocal attention at the European level: the imperative of fostering equitable opportunities across all regions of Europe. We must ensure that Central and Southern Europe have the mechanisms necessary to make chances equal. Importantly, this pursuit of equality does not imply a sacrifice of competitiveness. Rather, it underscores our collective endeavor as Europe to compete effectively against global giants such as the USA and China or Big Tech. Only through unity can we emerge victorious in this global race. Without addressing internal disparities and fostering solidarity, our aspirations for global success will remain elusive. Furthermore, a resonant theme that emerged from the discussion underscores the pivotal role of humanities, social sciences, and the arts in our conceptualization of innovation. These disciplines are not mere supplements but integral components of our innovation ecosystem. In essence, by prioritizing regional equity, fostering unity, and recognizing the multidimensional nature of innovation, we can forge a path toward a more inclusive and impactful European innovation landscape.

We are working intensively on future EU Culture Policies. The European Parliament has commissioned a study to provide an outlook of key issues and policies in the culture and creative sectors facing the CULT Committee in the coming term (2024-2029). The study will give newly elected Members or Members to the CULT Committee an expert perspective on the policy areas covered by their new role in view of opportunities and challenges ahead. It is a great pleasure to work on possible futures and meaningful policy responses with a great team as well as policy-makers and experts! 😮💨A busy week is coming to the end and finally I have a minute to reflect on 3 events I attended over the past two days: 📌 “The Spanish contribution to the major European Research and #Innovation priorities over 40 years of the EU”#FrameworkProgramme and in the future FP10’ 📌 “#ERC Annual Conference 2024: Frontier Research within and beyond planetary boundaries” 📌 “Qua Vadis: European #research policy?” 🗞️Summarizing them all at once is not an easy task, but there was one unifying theme that tied them together: the #future of research and innovation policy in the EU. 🔹Each event underscored the vital role research and innovation play in ensuring Europe’s #competitiveness, societal well-being, and global leadership. As Deputy Director Joanna Drake (DG RTD) stated, “There is no alternative to #science, and no alternative for innovation if we want to have a future for Europe”. 🔹In another event Director general Marc Lemaître (DG RTD) reinforced this idea, emphasizing the need to shape a true #ResearchAndInnovationUnion 🔹While the path forward remains open to debate, a newly appointed Commissioner for start-ups, research and innovation E. Zaharieva outlined five key priorities for the future: 1️⃣ Strengthening research ecosystems 2️⃣ Taking a leap forward in innovation and removing regulatory barriers; unlocking potential by linking research and innovation 3️⃣Building capacities in key technologies 4️⃣Promoting women in RDI These ambitions are coupled with a promise of an 5️⃣ ambitious successor to #HorizonEurope. 📄On paper, the future looks bright - but as always, the devil 😈 is in the details. Open questions remain: 🔸How will these priorities be implemented? 🔸What measures will be introduced? 🔸How will influential reports (e.g., Draghi, Letta, Heitor) shape the next framework? 💡During these discussions, one takeaway resonated deeply: “Let researchers do research, innovators - innovation, and businesses - their business”. This new commissioner’s motto left the room with a sense of optimism and determination. The question now is: will the actions match the words? 🧐 Let’s wait and see… 🔮

Earlier this week, our CEO, Ezechi Britton MBE, attended the Science and Innovation Banquet at Mansion House, organised by the City of London Corporation. The event was more than just a gathering; it was a celebration of the incredible advancements and collaborative efforts in science and technology that are driving our future forward. As we reflect on the event, several critical themes and discussions stand out: 🔹The event showcased UK’s strengths and the collaborative spirit that drives us to excel on the world stage. It was a powerful reminder of CFIT’s commitment to expanding our influence in these critical fields. 🔹The partnership between Government, private sector, and academia was a focal point of the discussions. The importance of these collaborations in fostering a robust innovation ecosystem is key. 🔹 The future of innovation depends on a skilled and educated workforce. There were compelling discussions on how we can further invest in education and training to support the next generation of scientists and innovators. The event was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do at CFIT – to support and drive innovation that benefits everyone. #OpenFinance https://lnkd.in/eaFPJ7Xc
