Using AI as a 'co-pilot' for creating an initial draft, researching, and fixing grammar/spelling is beneficial and even necessary to remain competitive. 💡 “Only 3% of Google's search results are purely AI-generated content." This statistic from an in-depth study challenges the perception that AI content is flooding the web. The researchers analyzed over 20,000 URLs across various categories to understand the prevalence and performance of AI-generated content. Here are the key takeaways: ➤ AI-generated content makes up just 3% of the pages appearing in the top 20 search results. Pages with over 50% AI content constitute 12%. ➤ Human-written content dominates at 88%, outperforming AI-generated pages in ranking. The top human-created pages rank in the top 5 results 50% of the time, while the best AI-generated pages are on the second SERP half the time. ➤ As the proportion of AI content increases, the average ranking drops. "The results suggest that human-written content outranks AI content." ➤ Some categories like Food have minimal AI content (<1%), while others like Commerce see a higher percentage (8%) of AI-generated pages. The findings suggest that while AI can reduce content creation costs, a purely AI-generated strategy may not be optimal for search visibility. As the authors note, "Our results caution against a purely AI-generated content strategy." However, the landscape is evolving rapidly. As AI improves and search algorithms adapt, the performance of AI content could change. The researchers plan to continue studying this trend. For now, the data indicates that human expertise and personal experience remain crucial for ranking well on Google. As the authors advise, "it is important to note that human-written content performs better in search" when evaluating content strategies.
