There are always plenty of things that make me feel grateful, but this one really stands out because it gave me the chance to repay someone for some life changing advice that I received many years ago. The story begins in 2005, when I was working in logistics as a transportation planner while pursuing my CCLP designation. The work was not very challenging, and I was looking for a change. So I applied to a role in transportation sales. I was interviewed by the Director, who asked me various questions about my background and why I was looking for a change. He noticed I had worked in IT recruitment, and asked if I had considered going back into recruitment. After further discussion, he told me he didn’t think this particular job was the right fit, but he encouraged me to look into recruitment, specifically focused on logistics. I took his advice to heart, and shortly thereafter I was hired by HAYS to be a part of their new Manufacturing and Logistics division. Fast forward 20 years to the present. I had kept in touch with the individual who had interviewed me, and seen him progress in his career. Like most of my top candidates, he was happy doing what he was doing, not actively applying to job postings, but open to an interesting opportunity if it came up. I had spoken to him about a few roles here and there, but nothing that was quite the right match. Until last month. One of my clients called me looking for help with a senior hire, seeking a strong leader in transportation. The internal Talent Acquisition team had been on the search for 6 months and hadn’t been able to find the right individual. As they described the role to me, I thought of my friend. I quickly made an introduction, and after a few weeks of interviews, negotiations and due diligence, he accepted their job offer. This is one of my most satisfying search assignments ever – things finally came full circle nearly 20 years later. My client is happy to add an incredible leader to their team. My candidate is happy with this exciting new opportunity with a global leader in logistics. And, of course, I’m happy too! It’s another win-win-win. I think there may be a lesson here as well – it’s important to keep in touch with your industry contacts, even (especially) when there’s no immediate benefit. Even if you’re not looking for work, it doesn’t hurt to talk to a recruiter. Have a great day!

A Candidate Changed a company every 2 years we consider them a “Job Hopper”. Stayed with a company for 10 years we consider them “Stagnated”. Left a company without a job we consider them “Incompetent”. Changed to a different industry we consider them “Not Specialized”. Worked in only local companies not MNCs we consider them "No culture fit". Stayed with the company for an average of 3-5 years suitable but you consider them “Too Expensive”. The perfect candidate doesn’t exist. Instead, look for Personalities and Potential hire the right ones, and make them perfect.
