As highlighted in this eloquent piece by Jim Dickinson on Wonkhe, maintenance loans are being eroded by inflation, with outdated parental income thresholds adding to the burden. This hits disadvantaged students the hardest. The government must urgently raise maintenance loans and update income thresholds to reflect today’s realities. If we are serious about access and participation, financial barriers must be addressed. A very powerful visualization for exploring today's stark polycrises, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. With a careful extension to the climate crisis, this map alone can serve as a useful reference point for climate-related future crises in the Pacific, island nations, and the Caribbean.

Interestingly, this analysis focuses on the "external" factors of "poverty" rather than any "internal" factors. I want to share a diagram developed by the 65-year-old Buddhist-based Sarvodaya Shramadana movement, which has mobilized millions out of poverty and built a national network of 5,000 village-based societies. They focus on the INNER and OUTER nature of poverty, and I am sharing a community-based approach using the Four Noble Truths. Why Re-Invent the Wheel?
