Infants under one year old are at greatest risk for serious disease and death because their immune systems are still developing. This age group continues to have the highest reported rate of pertussis. In Europe, during 2023-24, in 17 EU/EEA countries, infants (those under the age of one year) represented the group with the highest reported incidence, whereas in six countries, the highest incidence is reported in adolescents 10-19 years. The majority of deaths occurred in infants. To protect these, maternal DTaP should be considered. 57 460 pertussis cases were reported in infants younger than 1 year between 2000 and 2019, clearly showing how worng Physicians for Informed Consent are in their maths, pertussis incidence among infants younger than 2 months declined following maternal Tdap vaccination introduction; no similar decrease occurred among infants aged 6 months to less than 12 months.
