An intriguing pattern emerges in the latest global rankings of the world’s friendliest cities. From Singapore’s garden-lined streets to Sydney’s laid-back charm, these destinations aren’t just friendly – they’re profitable powerhouses, movers and shakers, if you will, that have mastered the art of combining warmth with world-class experiences. I can’t help but see striking parallels with our own industry’s potential. Just as Singapore, ranked first with a score of 94.84, has earned its reputation as a financial hub and hospitality haven, our wine regions can simultaneously pursue excellence in viticulture and visitor experience. The top-ranked cities share four key attributes: authenticity in experiences, accessibility, excellence and community integration. Bangkok’s vibrant streets and Tokyo’s fusion of tradition with modernity remind us that authenticity sells. Our wineries don’t need to be luxury fortresses – they must simply be genuine expressions of our terroir and people. When visitors experience real connections with our winemakers and cellar staff, they become lifetime ambassadors for our brands. And then there’s New York City, ranked 10th with a score of 84.26. Despite its sophistication, it remains approachable. Similarly, our industry must strike that delicate balance between premium positioning and welcoming accessibility. Wine appreciation shouldn’t be intimidating. It should be an invitation to explore. Ranked fifth with a score of 91.30, Cape Town’s success as a destination isn’t just about Table Mountain – it’s about how the city integrates its natural beauty with cultural experiences. Our wineries must similarly become community hubs, not isolated entities. The opportunity is clear. By investing in hospitality excellence, we’re not just being welcoming – we’re being strategic. If Hong Kong can transform its harbour into a tourism magnet while maintaining its business prowess, surely we can evolve our tasting rooms into unforgettable experience destinations while producing world-class wines. The world’s friendliest cities show us that warmth and profitability aren’t mutually exclusive but mutually reinforcing. There’s a lesson here. We’re not just selling wine. We’re selling memories, experiences and connections. Our terroir isn’t just in our soil, it’s in our smile, welcome and ability to make every visitor feel like they’re part of our wine family. That’s where true profitability lies. Take a moment to take a clear-eyed look at your visitor experience. Are you offering the same warmth that makes Singapore the world’s friendliest city? Your answer might just be the key to reaching your next level of success. Until next time Read our latest issue of WineLand here: https://lnkd.in/dmkxUqYn
