Many people have expressed concerns about returning to the office, citing some issues such as work-life balance, traffic, and a lack of flexibility. I acknowledge these concerns, as they are valid and affect many of us. Personally, I appreciate the office environment for several reasons. It allows for direct collaboration and fosters a sense of community. However, I recognize that finding a balance is crucial. If someone struggles to separate work from personal life, it’s a real concern for me and that needed to be addressed. Managers play a vital role in this process. Supporting employees who need occasional flexibility, such as working from home when necessary, can help create a healthier work environment for everyone. It’s about finding a balance that works for both the team and individual needs. If we are talking about work, it should be at work place, in the office ;) .

"The [interventions] that didn’t work were those aimed at individuals taking individual action to improve their personal work-life balance. Those that were more successful involved a change to the entire system." Too often, we put the pressure on the individual to manage stress and maintain a balance between work and personal life, which research shows is largely ineffective. To encourage changed behaviours at work, we need to see interventions aimed at the whole culture. We need to create a "new normal" that makes healthier choices easy, rather than relying on an individual's courage or willpower. If a person has to be brave at work just to take time off, something's broken. #betterworkplaces #workplaceculture #management

"Work-life integration evangelists often tout it as a replacement for the more familiar concept of “work-life balance.” But in practice, blindly embracing this idea leads to workplaces that are dangerously out of balance, which harms the long-term health of your team and your company. As managers, we have to resist the toxic parts of this phenomenon and be the guardians of our teams’ boundaries. Destroying the boundaries between life and work leads to a world in which one isn’t fully present in either place" https://lnkd.in/gHgDS_pt (Exodus 20:8-11)

I’ve spoken to many people recently who work at successful, growing companies, yet feel disconnected from the people they work with. They’re doing their jobs, receiving enough positive feedback to feel competent and secure, making decent money, and have work-life balance. But work is slowly draining them of their life force. In the 100’s of conversations I’ve had with people who feel this way, I keep coming back to one core issue: They feel disconnected - from the people they work with, from the company as a whole, and from their own inner wisdom. Again, a lot of these companies are growing, and that’s exciting. But as they grow, one office becomes three. IRL meetings move to Zoom. Team happy hours become less intimate, and eventually fizzle out. Companies spend big on team retreats and reward employees with trips to high-end hotels - but people dread coming back to work. As companies grow, it becomes harder to maintain the community feel. But when people don’t feel connected (to themselves, their colleagues, and the company as a whole), they’re less likely to stick around. And when people quit, the cost (in time and money) to rehire, retrain, and get a new person up to speed is enormous. We all have a primal need for connection. And yes, people can get those needs met outside of work. But if we spend 40+ hours per week at work, that’s nearly half of our waking hours. Imagine what it would be like to feel more connected and energized during those hours? Imagine if your company was a place where connection, learning, and growth were part of the culture, and people felt excited and motivated to contribute? When people feel more connected (again - to themselves, their colleagues, and the company as a whole), they’re more proactive, creative, and do what they say they’re going to do. The work experience becomes more energizing and fulfilling. Everybody wins. Here are some ways leaders can cultivate a more connected work environment (whether you’re in-person, remote, or hybrid): 1. Create an environment where everyone - regardless of background, identity, and level of experience - feels seen, understood, and celebrated. 2. Create shared experiences with the intention to connect and have fun. Whether it’s a company happy hour, holiday party, team retreat, or the weekly all-hands meeting, the key is being more intentional about how you design and facilitate the experience. 3. Practice shifting from being the sage on the stage, to the guide on the side. This means being the best 𝘧𝘰𝘳 the team, as opposed to the best 𝘰𝘯 the team. Asking better questions, as opposed to needing to have all the answers. Embracing the mindset that everyone has something to learn, and everyone has something to teach. And if you want expert support in any of the above, send me a message. At Third Nature, we’ve helped hundreds of leaders and dozens of organizations create more connected work environments over the years. I’d love to chat.

In today's fast-paced, information rich world, finding balance between work and life can sometimes feel like an uphill and constant battle. What if instead, we approached work and life with resilience, collaboration and innovation? By leveraging these qualities, we can turn challenges into opportunities, setbacks into lessons, and chaos into clarity. Resilience allows us to bounce back (or forward ideally) stronger from adversity, collaboration means we are better than the single sum of our parts, while innovation empowers us to find creative solutions and streamline our workflows, processes and the value we offer others. Together, they form a powerful trio that not only enhances our productivity at work but also enriches our personal lives. Whether it's embracing flexible work arrangements, prioritising self-care, or seeking out new ways to streamline tasks, resilience, collaboration and innovation pave the way for a more fulfilling work-life balance. It's not just about juggling responsibilities; it's about thriving in every aspect of our lives. #ResilienceIsKey #WorkLifeBalance #Innovation
