I was recently a guest on Bloomberg Adria, where I was asked the question what the main bottleneck is for the deployment of new renewables in the region. Permitting procedures seem to be the main culprit, but shorter permitting shouldn't come at the cost of poorer environmental impact assessments, particularly when another part of the permitting process, the grid connection permitting, is limited by the technical constraint of grid capacity. In the "bottleneck" analogy, this is like making the neck of the bottle slightly shorter without making it wider -- while risking both harm to nature and backlash from communities. This is why TNC is working across the region to identify areas with a high development potential, but low potential for conflicts with nature.
