What comes first: the housing or the jobs? Ryan Fecteau and I discuss the widespread lack of affordable housing options across different income levels, from high-earning individuals to those with low incomes. This is impacting employers' ability to recruit candidates, as people cannot find suitable housing, even for well-paying jobs. The issue also affects recent graduates from the University of Maine system, who are unable to stay in the area due to the lack of affordable housing options. Economic developers who spend time working with their employers to solve staffing issues may have a new challenge in store. On average, estimates are that one in 20 people in the U.S. workforce are unauthorized immigrants, though the numbers vary widely from state to state, with a high of 8.6% in Nevada to a low of .5% in Montana, per the Pew Charitable Trust’s most recent research. No doubt, there are wide variations within each state, and not all industries are equally impacted. In construction and agriculture, sources such as the American Immigration Council say that in several occupations the share of jobs filled by unauthorized immigrants ranges from 25%-39%. Whatever your point of view on this matter, if you are an economic developer or workforce development professional, it’s probably time to check in with your industries and localize your data.

"A majority of voters say they would support development in the right circumstances, according to new research". Housing Today reports on new research that underscores the importance of listening to communities when planning and designing new homes. As Jack Shaw at Labour Together notes: “While the specific details of local housebuilding projects will be contested, principled support for housebuilding should give the Government confidence to pursue a laser-like focus on building 1.5 million homes over the Parliament.” As we've long-argued, engaging effectively and meaningfully with communities will be key to ensuring that those specific details are understood and addressed early on. Listening to communities about their needs, ambitions, hopes and fears paves the way for successful development. We'll soon be publishing the final, well-tested version of our Code of Practice for Community Engagement and Consultation. It will help those working in the planning, design and development of homes and neighbourhoods to engage and consult communities effectively. So make sure you keep an eye out for that!
