In a shocking turn of events, Change Healthcare has fallen victim to the largest data breach in U.S. history, impacting over 100 million Americans. This horrific incident, executed by the ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware group, was made possible by a critical security flaw: the lack of multi-factor authentication (MFA) on remote access. As we witness services disrupted and financial data compromised, it’s clear that our healthcare systems are alarmingly vulnerable. For a sector that deals with sensitive information, the absence of basic security measures is unacceptable. This breach is not just a wake-up call for Change Healthcare; it's a call to action for the entire industry. Without stronger cybersecurity protocols and government oversight, we risk even greater catastrophes. Let’s prioritize security. Our data and lives depend on it. How can leaders strengthen defenses to ensure such breaches don’t happen again?

The ransomware group ALPHV, is believed to be behind the breach of one of the United States' largest health care payment processors. Their website went offline on Friday afternoon, causing disruptions in health care payment processing across the country. The incident has put major financial pressure on medical providers and made it difficult for consumers to access necessary medications. It's not clear why the website went down, and the FBI, which seized some of the site's infrastructure in December, did not provide a comment. The attack on Change Healthcare has severely affected health care providers' ability to process payments, potentially leading to closures for smaller practices. The American Hospital Association described the attack as the most serious incident of its kind against a U.S. health care organization. Change Healthcare has been working to restore its services and has engaged with law enforcement and cybersecurity firms to address the incident. CISA is also supporting remediation efforts. ALPHV has claimed responsibility for the attack and has been increasingly targeting health care organizations since the FBI's operation in December. Change Healthcare detected the attack on February 21 and took immediate steps to isolate impacted systems. Despite these efforts, the attack has caused significant disruptions, with thousands of organizations cutting off Change Healthcare from their systems to prevent further hacking incidents. Mandiant and Palo Alto Networks are among the cybersecurity firms involved in responding to the attack. https://lnkd.in/et34T2cH healthcare/
