It was a pleasure joining this conversation with Inside Higher Ed and a fabulous panel of experts today including Shawn VanDerziel, Sonnia Shields, Matthew Hora, Tina S. Gaddy -- all focused on expanding access to high quality internships. I was struck by a few insights in particular: 1) Pay is an important component of a quality internship for many reasons-- but there are several other top quality indicators as well. In particular, strong supervision and having tasks that directly add value to the employer are both critical features. These seem like obvious things, but they actually take a lot of intention to fully realize in practice. Thank you Shawn VanDerziel for these nuances. 2) Within majors and industries, the gaps in paid internships appear most frequent in the arts/humanities, and government and non-profit sectors. While there is a lot of work to do to ensure every internship is paid, Matthew Hora helpfully encouraged tailored approaches that prioritize specific programs and industries. 3) Expanding equitable access to internships is going to require multiple strategies, including building social capital, providing wraparound supports, reducing bias in hiring decisions and offsetting costs for unpaid experiences. It's such an exciting time to be doing this work in partnership with these field leaders. If you weren't able to make it, you should be able to register below to access the recording. https://lnkd.in/e6hY-_5X
