The fundamental problem with ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs) is that they do not understand what words mean. They are very much like a young savant who can recite every word in all six volumes of the History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire without comprehending any of the content. Without such comprehension, LLMs are not going to morph into artificial general intelligence (AGI) — the ability to perform any intellectual task that human beings can do. Many AI enthusiasts — including Tesla’s TSLA Elon Musk, Jensen Huang of Nvidia NVDA and pioneering AI researcher Ben Goertzel — nonetheless claim that AGI is just a few years away. This cheerleading certainly helps raise funds (just ask ChatGPT’s Sam Altman) and sell computer chips (just ask Nvidia) but it is increasingly recognized that the breathless hype is another case of Silicon Valley’s “fake-it-til-you-make-it” mentality.

Stanford University’s seventh annual report on the state of AI is a striking example of deflating expectations. This 2024 report is 502 pages of text, tables, and charts that summarize the latest AI developments. It is full of the usual metrics of the popularity of AI but it is also unusually restrained about the future of AI. After a week of presentations about the future of AI in education at #learningImpact24 and how it will revolutionize everything we do here’s and interesting counter opinion. https://lnkd.in/gMr8PXDs Maybe it’s just an indicator that we have entered the trough of disillusionment or maybe we are approaching diminishing returns. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang claims there’s no need to learn to write code and and in fact claims that he plans to automate all of Nvidia https://lnkd.in/g84QbNjr Personally, I’ve had a lot of mind blowing moments using LLMs and now rarely does a day go by that I don’t use one. What does everyone else think? Is AI overhyped or are we on the verge of transformation never before witnessed in human history?

Who's going to win the AI lottery and join the billionaire's club? My answer below. What if I'm right? We're seeing a lot of hype around AI chip makers like NVIDIA and model developers like OpenAI. Don't get me wrong, they're crucial. But here's the thing: Remember Web 1.0? Everyone was obsessed with infrastructure. Faster chips, better browsers, more bandwidth. These elements were essential for the web to function and for more people to come online. The hype made sense. Netscape was the darling of the 90s because everyone agreed that owning the "gateway to the internet" (Internet Browsers) was the place to get rich. But who really won? It wan't Netscape. It was the application layer. Google. Amazon. Facebook. They solved real problems. How to find anything. How to buy anything. How to connect with anyone. That's where the real value was created. I think we're seeing the same pattern with AI. Application layer AI could be the “killer apps” of the AI era, as we build on commoditized infrastructure and models. At Cyft, we're not trying to build the next ChatGPT. We're focused on one thing. The application of Artificial Intelligence to make MSPs more profitable. If I'm right, then the answer to that first question is "everyone that works at and invests in Cyft and other killer applications." Let's see if history repeats itself.

My ChatGPT-4o (omni) comments: - It is free and faster to generate text; I wonder how many AI Startups will fail due to that unfair competition (free Microsoft copilot, Google Gemini, too). I would surely not want to compete. But if you check Producthunt, 80% of new products listed for the past 6 months are "AI." - NVIDIA is happy selling the hardware. Electricity consumption is boosted, and I wonder about CO2 and the environment. - the Italian speech in the demo video with their CTO sounds like a fake accent; only Italians could tell that, but I am one. - described exactly a few "cat on chair" photos, including hints of partial objects and people in the backgrounds. This works. PS: No AI was used to write this post. I am open to working for you on what AI can't do yet; click on my profile for my story.

6moYou brought up a crucial point regarding the limitations of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, likening them to a savant reciting without comprehension. This analogy resonates with historical debates on artificial general intelligence (AGI) and the complexities of true understanding. Considering this, how might we bridge the gap between mere data processing and genuine comprehension in AI systems, especially in light of the persistent hype surrounding AGI's imminent arrival propagated by figures like Elon Musk and Jensen Huang?
