Kenya's Fintech & E-Commerce Boom: An Interview with CNBC Africa's Tabitha Muthoni at the Connected Africa Summit 2024. In this exclusive interview with CNBC Africa's Tabitha Muthoni at the recently concluded ICT Authority Connected Africa Summit 2024, I discussed the transformative impact of fintech and e-commerce on Kenya's economy. During the conversation, I delved into the fintech sector, energized by significant foreign and local investments, as well as contextually relevant innovations. At the heart of this transformation is Safaricom PLC's M-Pesa, which has become a key driver for numerous financial services and startups in Kenya. I highlighted the creativity of nearly 100,000 developers who are using M-Pesa to create new, value-added solutions in Kenya's digital financial services landscape. I also covered the explosive growth of e-commerce, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the critical role of mobile money in supporting a variety of digital transactions and services in Kenya. However, despite Kenya's impressive progress from a digital financial services perspective, we face ongoing challenges such as digital divides and regulatory constraints going forward. Nonetheless, through strategic collaborations and an adaptive regulatory approach, Kenya is making headway in overcoming some of these barriers. I also stressed the importance of learning from global digital leaders and engaging in knowledge exchange to boost Kenya's local innovations. By drawing on experiences from countries like Estonia and collaborating internationally, Kenya can further enhance its leadership as one of Africa's most digitally progressive countries. Ultimately, this interview not only reflects on Kenya's current achievements but also outlines the vast potential for future advancements. Please watch or listen to what I think are valuable perspectives to help navigate Kenya's fast-evolving digital landscape. #Fintech #DigitalFinancialServices #DFS #BFSI #Kenya #Africa #ConnectedAfricaSummit #CNBCAfrica #Interview #Safaricom #MPesa #MobileMoney #ECommerce #DigitalTransformation

A Call for Innovation: Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC's Opportunity to Excel As a seasoned telecommunications consumer and a customer from its early days here in Ethiopia, I believe it's imperative for the company to evolve to meet the rapidly changing demands of Ethiopia's digital landscape. To remain a competitive force and offer customers the best possible experience, I urge Safaricom to: 1. Expand Global Reach: Integrate with other Safaricom markets to offer seamless roaming and affordable international connectivity. 2. Harness Mobile Money: Leverage M-Pesa to drive e-commerce and capitalize on Ethiopia's macroeconomic reforms. 3. Enter the Fintech Arena: Position Safaricom as a leading fintech player by offering innovative financial services. 4. Deliver High-Speed Broadband: Meet the growing demand for reliable and fast internet connections. 5. Partner with Global E-commerce Giants: Collaborate with world-class platforms like AliExpress and Amazon to offer a diverse range of products and services, and integrate international payment systems for a seamless customer experience. By implementing these strategies (through negotiations with GoE), Safaricom can position itself as a preferred choice for Ethiopian consumers, offering quality services, innovation, and value. This would help to create a vibrant and competitive telecommunications landscape in Ethiopia. #Safaricom #Ethiopia #telecommunications #innovation #digitaltransformation

Uganda's e-Commerce faces two pivotal challenges: a) High delivery costs due to inadequate addressing, eclipsing company profit margins. b) Widespread cash circulation, fueled by Uganda's entrenched cash-dependent culture. To propel growth, the government should: a) Roll out nationwide house numbering and road signage in urban and rural areas promptly, as technological advancements wait for no nation. b) Promote digital payments, discouraging cash transactions. c) Initiate a mindset shift towards digital adoption among Ugandans, starting with primary school teachers, who significantly influence education and community perspectives. Notably, during the introduction of mobile money in Uganda, we successfully onboarded rural teachers, recognizing their authority and trusted voice within communities. My recent encounter with a bodaboda rider giving me a soiled bank note as change underscores this issue's urgency. As a digitalization advocate, I'm compelled to share and spark meaningful dialogue.

MPost Africa HQ (Techstars '23) has officially launched its innovative digital postal service in Rwanda, introducing the e-P.O Box system. This new solution aims to revolutionize the postal experience for Rwandans by allowing individuals and businesses to receive mail and parcels directly to their mobile-linked e-P.O. Box, eliminating the need for physical P.O. Boxes. With fewer than 1% of Rwanda's population having access to traditional post offices, MPOST’s technology will enable Rwandans to convert their cell phone numbers into formal postal addresses. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance postal accessibility and convenience for the local population, aligning with the government's efforts to leverage innovation and technology for socioeconomic progress. MPOST’s entry into Rwanda is set to benefit e-commerce businesses by expanding their reach, improving customer satisfaction, and reducing delivery times. By providing a more efficient postal service, the e-P.O. Box platform will support local entrepreneurs and enterprises, fostering economic growth and positioning Rwanda as a leading hub for digital commerce in the region. The efficiency of MPOST’s system will address logistical challenges and lower operational costs for e-commerce platforms, encouraging further investment from start-ups and established companies in Rwanda's digital economy. This marks a significant step towards boosting the nation's economic development and enhancing public services through innovative technological solutions.
