Next week (4 June), International Energy Agency (IEA) will release a new report: COP28 UAE Tripling #Renewable Capacity Pledge: Tracking countries’ ambitions and identifying policies to bridge the gap, which will publish along with updates to our Renewable Energy Progress Tracker, forms part of this work. By providing a global stocktake of governments’ renewable capacity plans, the analysis – which covers more than 145 countries – explores whether recent trends in the deployment of renewables are in line with government ambitions and the goal of reaching 11 000 gigawatts (GW) of capacity by 2030. It also provides regional insights; identifies key challenges for both advanced and emerging economies; and suggests priority areas for policy makers to close the implementation gap, particularly as they update their Nationally Determined Contributions, or #NDCs, under the Paris Agreement. https://lnkd.in/ejC4YHaK #unfccc #cop28 #solarPV #windpower #hydropower #renewables #ambition

Azerbaijan is focused on becoming a leader in renewable energy through its Green Energy Transition Initiatives, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2050. With the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the country began exploring low-carbon hydrogen production in February 2023, actively working to bring its vision of a dynamic green hydrogen sector to life. Collaboration agreements with global private sector stakeholders will enable the development of around 10 GW of renewable energy in the medium term, contributing significantly to hydrogen production. As part of its efforts at COP29, Azerbaijan is committed to advancing innovative solutions in the energy sector. #COP29 #COP29Azerbaijan #GreenHydrogen #ClimateAction

Around 200 countries pledged to triple renewable power capacity during the UN Cop 28 summit in Dubai last year. Their updated nationally determined contributions (NDCs) — countries' climate plans — are due to be submitted next year and include revised ambitions for 2030 and new goals for 2035. 🚀 📽 COP28 united parties around a pledge to triple current global renewable capacity from about 3.8 GW currently to reach 11 TW by 2030, placing renewables at the centre of achieving global climate commitments. If fully realised, 11 TW of capacity could see renewable energy contributing to 62% of all emissions reductions by 2030. Still, this is not fully sufficient to realise net zero goals and will have to be complemented by other important pledges signed / reiterated at COP28. What is the outlook for renewable, especially solar, capacity over this period? Can its growth be sustained, and which are the main established and emerging markets? What are the implications of large-scale, very low-cost solar power for the global energy system and geopolitics? Governments are being asked by the COP29 presidency to back a pledge to increase global energy storage capacity six times above 2022 levels, reaching 1,500 gigawatts (GW) by 2030, and to add or refurbish more than 80 million kilometres of electricity grids by 2030. The targeted increase in the ability to store energy, mainly in batteries, is what the International Energy Agency (IEA) has said is needed to meet the goal set last year at #COP28 to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030 while maintaining energy security. World Will Miss 2030 Renewable Electricity Target - IEA An analysis by the International Energy Agency (IEA) reveals that the world is not on track to meet the target of tripling renewable electricity generation by 2030, despite this goal being crucial for transitioning from fossil fuels. Current Status and Projections In December, countries agreed to triple renewable power by the decade's end. However, the IEA's analysis of policies from nearly 150 countries shows that at current rates, global renewable capacity will only roughly double in developed countries and slightly more than double globally by 2030. Calls for Action Fatih Birol, IEA's executive director, emphasizes that while the tripling target is ambitious, it remains achievable if governments swiftly convert promises into actionable plans. He urges nations to integrate renewable targets and policies into their national action plans for climate (NDCs) as required under the Paris Agreement. Key Findings The IEA's analysis indicates that current policies will lead to about 8,000GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. This figure is approximately 70% of the 11,000GW needed to meet the tripling goal set at the Cop28 UN climate summit in Dubai last year. Governments worldwide have a significant opportunity to accelerate progress towards a more secure, affordable, and sustainable energy system. Concrete actions and policy integrations are essential to meet the ambitious renewable energy targets necessary for mitigating climate change. #RenewableEnergy #ClimateChange #SustainableEnergy #IEA #EnergyTransition #COP28 #GlobalWarming #CleanEnergy #GreenEnergy #2030Goals #PACEPeople
