After falling short in Dubai at COP28, it’s encouraging to see an agreement on the details of carbon credits within Article 6 mechanisms. This topic was the focus of my LLM dissertation, so I'm especially intrigued to see if this progress helps tackle persistent issues like double counting. 🤔 #ClimatePolicy #COP29 #ParisAgreement
A breakthrough announcement on the first day of #COP29: Parties have reached a consensus on standards for the creation of carbon credits under Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement. Fully operationalising Article 6 is a key priority for the COP29 Presidency and this is an essential step in reaching that goal. It will enable #climateaction and help direct resources to the developing world. The #COP29 Presidency is grateful to all Parties who have come to COP29 in a spirit of collaboration to reach critical agreements. #Carboncredits #COP29 On the first day of COP 29, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, a significant milestone was achieved as Parties reached a consensus on the standards for creating carbon credits under Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement. This consensus is expected to enhance climate action by boosting the demand for carbon credits and ensuring the integrity of the international carbon market under UN supervision.

Yesterday marked the official start of COP29 in Baku, bringing the world together to address the urgent challenges of climate change. 🌱 Through the COP29-IEA High-Level Energy Transition Dialogues, two main priority themes have been identified: 1. Actions to implement the energy goals agreed at COP28 2. Actions to mobilize greater investment in energy transitions, particularly in emerging economies This event provides a powerful platform for advancing global efforts to limit the rise in temperatures to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. To achieve this, five critical opportunities have been highlighted: 1. Scaling up energy storage and electricity grids: By 2030, we need to expand global energy storage capacity to 1,500 GW, mainly through battery storage, to meet the goal of tripling renewable energy capacity. Supporting the COP29 Presidency’s Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge is a significant step toward aligning with the 1.5°C transition pathway. 2. Accelerating energy efficiency progress: A year after COP28’s historic agreement, the world still needs to accelerate efforts to double energy efficiency by 2030. A comprehensive policy approach and increased investments in energy efficiency are essential for reducing emissions and lowering consumer energy bills. 3. Reducing methane and fossil fuel emissions: Expanding clean energy alone is not enough; we also need clear policies to cut emissions, including phasing out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies and responsibly decommissioning fossil fuel infrastructure. Initiatives like the Global Methane Pledge provide a foundation for action. 4. Boosting clean energy investment in developing economies: Supporting transitions in developing economies will require concessional funding to triple to USD 115 billion annually by 2030. This financing will ensure equitable access to clean energy solutions. 5. Incorporating the Global Stocktake outcomes into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs): Future NDCs should reflect the Global Stocktake outcomes, integrating them into national development strategies to keep the 1.5°C target within reach and achieve substantial emission reductions by 2030 and beyond. At COP29, we have a unique opportunity to demonstrate Azerbaijan’s commitment to global climate leadership. This event is not only a chance to contribute to the global climate agenda but also a moment for all Azerbaijanis to come together. Regardless of political views or individual interests, this is a moment to stand united and show our nation's strength on the world stage. Together, we can support COP29 and showcase Azerbaijan’s leadership in tackling one of the most critical challenges of our time. 🌍💪 #COP29 #Baku #ClimateAction #EnergyTransition #Azerbaijan

Fabulous game changer with operationalized Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement and the consensus agreement for the creating of a global carbon credit trading system in the carbon offsets landscape. Effectively and collectively by signatories accreditation to participate in the Carbon Credit lucrative trillion dollar industry, including accreditation criteria for registration of participants requirements and commitments. At collective global scale and effective quantified reduction in global carbon emissions simultaneously with multiple benefits to health, environmental conditions and sustainability in acceleratng the transition to renewables and clean air, environmental and socio- productivity and well being 🌺

One of the biggest concerns with carbon markets right now is the integrity of carbon credits - this could be a huge step in developing global carbon trade! It's easy to dismiss carbon credits as throwing money at the problem, but in some cases - Singapore being a big example - we are limited in the extent of decarbonisation we can carry out by ourselves. A reliable voluntary market would go a long way in helping us get to net zero.

In the Glasgow COP, it was first time that the word fossil fuel was used. COP27 had its own significance because of the debate of Loss And Damage Fund & 🇵🇰 chairing G77 +China leading the case of L&D. In COP28, although mention of fossil fuel was a bit diluted, yet the term transition away, made it significant. Carbon markets & negotiations around Article 6 will be another important point of discussion during #COP29. COPs are not forums where financing is provided, rather they are forums of policy decisions." Dr. Abid Qaiyum Suleri member International Advisory Committee of COP29 Azerbaijan & ED SDPI delivered keynote address during #PreCOP by #PGCEP & SDPI #PreCOP29 #ClimateAction

2moWise words, We have an environmental solution now, 858 million tons of CO2 each year by economically profitable means IRR 37% in the US, renewable, sustainable, with carbon credit. All that is needed is the financial backing that IMO is calling for. To drive the initiative forward providing green methanol we need to build the plants now, not in 3- 4 years time with world bank but with sustainable finance that relies on profit. Solutions are here to make large impacts into global warming. Lets use them.
